Well after 2.5 months the verdict is in.My JD 2240 needs a complete engine rebuild to the tune of about $5,0000, per Sunsouth. Which is $1000 less than I paid for the dam thing 10 years ago. This is after I just dropped about $1,000 to fix what got burned. Does it make any financial sense to do this or do I just turn it into scrap and buy a slightly used one?

I don’t think I’d fix it. I’d get another used one. If it’s a 2wd tractor they’re a dime a dozen.

What exactly is the problem.

Re-sleeving it and putting new rings/seals is a heck of a job but I know some guys here in Cullman that do it in less than 2 days while doing other jobs. Of course it’s their own tractors and they’ve done it several times over the years.

If sunsouth wants $5,000 then any other qualified mechanic will do it for $2500.

I would probably bet this is real close. But you’ll have to look for a good tractor mechanic, not tons of them anymore.

Coker in Arab has a real good mechanic. Not sure on their prices these days but that’s where we go if we don’t want or can’t do a job.

Id shop prices. And like asked whats the problem? They can be inframed and save some cost depending on the problem.

Id call cross creek in cullman and see what they get for a reman. Im sure they know some independents who do installs.

Check the tractor salvage places, they might can find a used engine that still has life.

That's very labor intensive job which he wouldn't be saving money going that route. That john deer is a wet liner engine and should be able to do an inframe in it if the cranks good and doesn't need turned or polished etc. If its inframe and places beside a dealer that job would be any where from $500-1000 in parts depending if you went with john deere parts or aftermarket imported parts. Labor will vary from shop to shop since shops hourly rate varies.

Depends on how bad you want to keep it. I would probably get another one.

Talked to a buddy of mine here around Knoxville. He was not at work at the time but thinks the whole rebuild kit is around 900 dollars. He said he might be a little low or might be a little high. He would have to check it tomorrow when he gets to work. Let me know if you want me to find out for sure.

No question this would be my route if everything else is good. Lots of older high hour Deere’s still running like champ with this fix.

Plus necessary tools and man hours. Sometimes you can save a lot of money but if you don't have the time or tools it's not worth it.

I've got some family out in your neck of the woods that's got several 2355 john Deere tractors with 16k-20k hours on them. They've got some other john Deere with tons of hours on them running them on the dairy

JD kits are pretty cheap compared to most other brands (kubota is usually double) $8-1100.00 depending
I would have the head worked if it were me while it’s off. Wet liner engines are also the cheaper to build labor wise.
That said I couldn’t imagine it being done by a reputable place less than $4k.
I’ll be honest and say one thing we have to do these days that I didn’t use to worry about, every engine we build these days gets a little extra figured in for Chinese parts failures. Any engine I’ve built in the last 5 years that failed was part failure but I still have to warranty it.
If a Chinese kid gets a little off on his QC and a bearing fails, we get that bearing replaced that’s it then if it burns a crank shaft I have to buy one and then we have to buy the gaskets, fluids, filters etc and build it again.

That’s why I won’t build engines in house anymore unless they stay local. If we build one and it gets 1200 miles from home and a bearing or gasket fails it could cost me 4-5 times what I charged to build it to get it repaired or back home so I can repair it

The problem is finding a good mechanic. The guy who worked on it for years passed away and I spent months trying to find someone before I had Sunsouth come get it. Plus I have been trying to deal with this from 350 miles away.
