That’s red oak acorns and leaves with white oak bark. Never seen it before.

I’m pretty positive. I didn’t see any other leaves and no other oaks close. That’s why I was confused.

Is that an oak tree directly to the right in the picture?

When I say close, I mean within a few feet. I picked up the leaves from the base of the tree pictured.

Whoa whoa whoa. Don’t be bringing those accusations up in here!!

FWIW, I looked up into the tree and it looked like those leaves were on the branches. The lowest branch was probably 35ft up, so I could be wrong.

Lol.

I suck at tree ID, I need to get better at it. I'm no use to this thread except for smart azz accusations here and there grin

Those pictures do not match up. That’s a case of 1+1 does not equal 2!

Pin oak bark does not look like that. No red oak has flaking gray bark. Pin oak has gray bark, with rigid furroughs in it.

It’s a new species. Fixing to be called the SBS oak after I get my local botanist out here.

You’re absolutely right on the leaves/acorns. That bark is a white oak. Ain’t a red oak anywhere in TN with bark like that.

Get out your binoculars and figure out what leaves that tree has. The bark and leaves don't match up.

All white oak species have rounded lobes on the leaves. All red oak species have pointed lobes on the leaves.

Bark may differ, but the leaves ( I use binoculars ) will always tell you which ethnicity your oak tree may be.

I've never understood that, Blackjack oak is a red and the leaves sure don't look pointed to me.

I still think the tree/bark shown is a white oak , could possibly be a chinkapin , they are very similar . The leaves look to be scarlet or pin oak.

All red oak species will have bristles on the end of the leaf. Water oak and willow oak are red oaks as well and have rounded lobes. As already stated, the leaves and acorns definitely didn’t come from the tree pictured.
