I can read/use scales, rulers, tapes, calipers, micrometers, dividers, telescoping gauges, bore gauges, vernier scales, framing squares, multimeters, thermometers, compasses, maps, height gauges, face clocks, etc. etc. etc., and even books. But I'll admit, I don't have a clue without using google about how to measure my head for a hat. Diameter tape. We use them daily at work.

So your hat size is the same as the diameter as if you had a cylindrical head. Is that it?

I'm in between 7 3/8 & 7 1/2. Normally I go with 7 1/2.
