This spring I planted a bag of the NWTF chufa. It grew reasonably well this summer. I sprayed it a couple times to help it out. It seems as if it's done about all it's going to do. And, it turned out pretty good. Now, can I top seed some crimson clover over it for a winter deer plot? When I say top seed, I mean just a throw and mow application. I'm not actually going to do any soil tillage. I've got a good little bit of soil showing due to the herbicide applications this summer. Will the clover impede the turkeys from digging it up in the spring? Will it actually help it last longer by making it harder to dig up? Will mowing it really effect anything being since it's already mature. I planted it as soon my chufa seeds come in. (Early June if I'm not mistaken.) Should I just leave it be? I would like to utilize that acre for extra food plot this winter if possible. But, I don't want to take anything away from the chufa. Common sense tells me it's be fine to top seed it, the chufa had already made, besides crimson clover will head out in the spring and make the plot that much more attractive to turkeys. But, still I could be wrong. What say you guys?

I think that it won't hurt anything and have done it myself when I had limited open land on a tract. I've done it in years when I didn't make a good crop. Since you did, turkeys will probably destroy any clover that comes up. A lot depends on how much turkeys use the plot. I don't think the clover will slow them down from digging.

I wouldn't run over it with a cultipacker; that would compact the soil and make it harder for turkeys to dig them up. It is definitely possible for the soil to get so hard that they give up scratching for them.
You made a good crop of chufas. I would just congratulate myself and turn it over to the turkeys. Spreading some clover seed over it won't hurt anything, but I wouldn't do more than that. Good luck with it
