I have had a hard time finding deer beds in general, much less a "buck" bed, but I may not know what I'm looking at either. Can anybody post some pics to help identify those of us that aren't seasoned deer hunters?

While walking on Wheeler just after the season one year, I walked up on a wide 6 pt (close to 18" that I had seen in the season) that was bedded in a fallen tree top. I was using a stalking stick (hard to explain but I use it to make myself sound like a 4 legged animal/deer) and walked right up to him, but I didn't know he was there until he took a few hops and stopped about 40 yards away. I am convinced that he thought I was another deer, but he didn't know for sure I didn't move, and after about 5-10 minutes, he went to eating. I kept watching him and he would get behind some brush and I would think he was gone, but later, I would see movement. I watched him on and off for about 1 1/2 hours. I decided to see how close I could get and slowly moved his way, in a slow game of "red light, green light". I got to about 20 yards and then he started my way. At about 10 yards away, with no real cover between us, he plopped down. I was standing beside a tree and it was open between me and the deer. Within a few minutes, he closed his eyes. I was supposed to meet my brother in law at a certain spot and I was late because I was watching the deer. I whistled and he opened his eyes with a body twitch. He stayed bedded with the wind at his back. The woods where I was standing was very open and swampy, and the woods behind him were thick. I was downwind the whole time. He never did close his eyes again. Finally, I had to go so I barely moved. In a flash, he was gone. Later when I talked to my B-I-L, he said a buck had run by him. It was a very enjoyable 2 1/2 hours, watching him.

a mature buck will bed just about anywhere THAT HE ISN'T DISTURBED, sight, sound, or scent wise. This^^^ One of the biggest I've seen on property I could hunt was bedded on a little knob surrounded by water about 10x10 within 15 yards of the highway watching traffic go by. You had to look just right to see him.

How do you tell the difference between a buck bed and doe bed? I have seen does lay down alone I dont think you can. I’m just trying to learn and see if there are tendencies to where bucks bed. I guess it’s relatively unknown. I think its a pretty good bet that when you see a bed of multiple animals its usually does. Single? Likely a buck but it ain't worth betting on
I don't want to pass quietly into the night. I want to slide in sideways kickin and screamin Life really is awesome ... Soak it up while you can ...

Come on man...come up with a mature answer When you find depressed vegetation or leaves in a deer like shape that might be a bed. If it is a bed there is probably deer poop close by and you should be able to find some deer hair in the bed.

Thanks Southwood, that definitely will help in my search. Are does big about bedding in young pines? The white belly hair is always a dead give away for me looking at beds. And yes deer in general love bedding in young pines that are thick and otherwise "unhuntable". A really big bed that is heavily worn down is indicative of an older deer. That plus rubs in the general area although not always the case if you hunt low deer density areas. I always key in on a combination of things to find beds: 1) elevation changes and thick cover. A thick east west running ridge with secondary points is great.
