Anyone else get their unit assignments for the SOA hunts? I drew unit 14 for the Cedar Creek gun hunt, Jan. 24-27. Looks to be a well laid out unit from looking at aerials.

Did anyone hunt Cedar Creek last year? When is the rut typically in the area? I’m thinking the last week of January should be a good time to be there, provided the weather cooperates.

You are correct on the timing. I've hunted just upriver for 30+ years and the last part of January is the time to see the biggest bucks. The peak of the rut has just passed by a week or so and only the biggest and strongest still have energy and are still roaming looking for a leftover doe. The smaller bucks will be hitting the food sources pretty hard so you need to decide whether you want to go for the bigger bucks or settle for a smaller one. Big = hunt travel lanes and off of the food plots. As close to a sure shot as you can get = hunt the food sources. That has been the tendency from my experience, but some years are just different based on weather or whatever else makes a deer act differently. Bottom line, congrats, that is a fine draw.

Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

Have not heard anything as an alternate for Fred T Stimpson late October hunt.

I drew unit 9 at Portland Landing February 7-10. Guess I’ll get to close out my season there.

I’ll be on section 12 on Stimpson on the October 25th hunt. Actually hunted that same section last year in February. Bucks out the wazoo but tough bow hunting.

Also hunted Uchee Creek as a buddy’s guest last January. Section 10 I think it was. Ton of deer. I smoked a really nice 8 with my rifle there.

Was the rut still going on in Jan? I am hoping they are chasing late Dec for sure.

They were scraping and rubbing everywhere and the buck that I killed was following a doe but wasn’t really chasing hard.
