There's a bunch of buckeye trees on Wheeler Refuge but they drop before season opens. And yes, the deer absolutely hammer them.
I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. If multiple convicts are to be hanged they can choose with whom to share the gallows or names shall be drawn from the hangman's hat to be hanged 2 at a time.

Interesting. A friend of mine in Kentucky has them on his place. He said that buckeyes will kill his cattle if they ingest them. Any idea why it doesn't affect the deer? I've also read studies where squirrels will only eat small portions at one "sitting" in captivity. They'll later finish the uneaten portion of the buckeye. It's like they know just how much to eat without it killing them.

The tannic acid released into a cow's body during digestion of acorns or buckeyes results in kidney failure.

If they are like most hard mast trees, you'll be planting them for your children or someone else's children. If you plan on hunting over them you probably need to go buy some sawtooth oaks.

Are you sure they are Buckeyes / American Chestnut? or are they Horse Chestnut? Deer / wildlife do not eat Horse Chestnut. True American chestnuts in the wild are rare around here. Big difference between a buckeye and a chestnut of any sort. We have several species of buckeye that grow here in Alabama. Yellow, red and ohio buckeyes are all fairly common in North Alabama/ southern Tennessee. Horse Chestnuts are also a buckeye and not really a chestnut. Wallygator, did you find any of the husks or just the fruit? Were they coming from a larger tree or a shrub?

Buckeyes I have seen are more of tall bush not a tree... about 8-10 feet in height. I found several stands of the bushes that you speak of on Wheeler Refuge and got to looking up and around. It turned out that I was standing under some buckeye trees that were 18" thru and 50 feet tall. The bushes had sprouted from the leftover buckeyes that the deer missed and I don't know if they'll ever grow to be very big due to being shaded out by the canopy above them. They biggest ones were bearing fruit though.

7mm-08 where did you get acorns will kill cows? We've had cows all my life (I'm over 50) and they eat them like candy and never had a problem. I've always heard acorns are not good for cattle. Maybe some acorns are different. Just what was past down. I don't know.

In south Alabama, never seen a buckeye over 8-10 feet Some like the red buckeye are shrubs, and others like the yellow or ohio are actual trees. Acorns can kill cows if they eat enough of them at once. They will start to ferment and cause the cow to bloat or get tannin poisoning.
