Over the next few years we plan to put in a few new plots for gun hunting. What do you think is the best food plot shape for a one acre plot? I'd like to design the layout to get the maximum amount of sunlight. On our property, the fields that run N to S or NW to SE tend to do better. The property is relatively flat, is located in SW Alabama and has both hardwoods and pine plantation.

Just a simple rectangle or triangle.

Rectangle with enough room for leaving a buffer of tall grass or some type of crop on each side.

It be's that way sometimes.

I was fortunate enough to hunt an overgrown pecan orchard for a few years that was part of a hayfield. I had a huge plot shaped like a T. That was awesome.

Shape makes no difference to me but I like plots with shooting lanes off of them.

A rectangle or square is probably the worst shape field if you want mature bucks to use it during the daytime. A rectangle with a buffer is better but a field with more live edge is significantly better.

I like one shaped so as a buck can't check both ends without walking to the middle. A, V or C shaped field achieves this. A square, oval or rectangle one makes it too easy for a buck to step to the edge and check the whole field for does.

I love a long narrow plot.

I have never been much on hunting fields, but I do plant them. I have always had greater numbers of deer feed on L shaped fields. We usually call these shaped fields Dogleggs. I really think the best fields are the ones that have areas in them that break up the solid, open area effect. Leaving some small pines, brush piles, etc has always seemed to put deer more at ease as they feed. I think it is the security of knowing safety is just a leap away that makes deer use certain fields more than others.

2x come planting time you will too. Plus offers lots of edge. Also take out all trees. I’ve put in several fields over past few years. My dozer operator always left a few oak and persimmon trees standing in fields. After planting around trees for 5-6 years, I went back and took everyone of them out. There are plenty of trees along the edge of fields and in the woods. I’d spend more time working around a couple trees in a field than it took to plant the entire field. Coulters on planter or disc cut tree roots and kill trees. Also good way break equipment by trying to get close to tree.
