Shape makes no difference to me but I like plots with shooting lanes off of them.

I like one shaped so as a buck can't check both ends without walking to the middle. A, V or C shaped field achieves this. A square, oval or rectangle one makes it too easy for a buck to step to the edge and check the whole field for does.

I have never been much on hunting fields, but I do plant them. I have always had greater numbers of deer feed on L shaped fields. We usually call these shaped fields Dogleggs. I really think the best fields are the ones that have areas in them that break up the solid, open area effect. Leaving some small pines, brush piles, etc has always seemed to put deer more at ease as they feed. I think it is the security of knowing safety is just a leap away that makes deer use certain fields more than others.
