This link was posted in the storm time thread. Cool old light house. I got in YouTube worm hole watching videos on it. It’s actaully a privately owned bed and breakfast now!

My question is where are the 80 ft waves that they were talking about this morning on the news? I watched that video and yep, it looks like a typical storm out in the gulf or the Atlantic. News is making this one out like it's going to come in and sling tornados and hurricane force winds all the way to Oklahoma and drop 200+ inches of rain. It will be a bad storm for the Caronlinas but the real damage will result from flooding caused by the torrential rain as it stalls once hitting shore. There will probably also be some fairly significant storm surge damage right along the coast and SC lowlands. In the end, it is just another routine hurricane. If anybody sees a pic of those 80 ft waves they were talking about this morning on the weather channel, I'd like to see that.

I think depth has a lot to do with wave size.

As exciting as watching paint dry. If you've lived thru several this is nothing new.

Exactly Perch. At the end of the day, the only things that matter with a hurricane are the actual on the ground wind speed (not what it's doing 5 miles up in the air above the eyewall), the actual height of the storm surge (what is the true surge when it actually makes landfall), how many tornados it spins off, and how much rain and over what period of time. All the BS hype doesn't mean a dang thing if they say it's a CAT 4 and yet the highest recorded surface wind speed/gust on three different sea buoys within 5 miles of the actual point of landfall is only 86 mph (this is what happened with the "CAT 4" that hit Texas last year). The rain did all the damage on that one.

I think the 80 foot wave report was fake news.

It was reported yesterday by the NWS. I linked it in the Storm Time Thread.

80' from trough basin to wave crest. I think the continental shelf helps a lot of the US mainland from those huge waves and tsunami's. As those swells hit the shallower water at the shelf (however far offshore that is), it makes them crest and become smaller?

The harder I practice, the luckier I get.

bama1971, most waves or surf is caused when rollers hit shallower water. Its the change in depth or bottom contours that cause it.

I'm familiar with the sharknados here in the Gulf which typically drop bull sharks, black tips, tigers and hammer heads. With this storm coming in from the Atlantic, would you anticipate the species in the mix being different and possibly even more deadly than the typical sharknado that we normally see?

Looks like this one is gonna be a lot of rain, which isn’t ideal for Columbia but hopefully with it weakening some it won’t hurt the coast all that much. I’d prefer to not have my job trailers in Myrtle relocated by storm surge.

As far as Frying Pan Tower, it’s only like 30 miles from the beach in Wilmington. May want to check back with it in about 6 hours when the main part of the storm gets there. Hope it survives as it’s a great fishing spot.

You gotta be joking.
I'd rather start a fund to kick the ass of whomever forgot to remove the flag before evacuation.

I'd say the 80-foot waves were legit. That doesn't mean the conditions that supported that yesterday are going to support them today.

[Linked Image]

Water depth certainly plays a role, but it's a lot easier to think about when it comes to a tsunami, where it's basically just one wave. As the wave (energy) approaches the shallower water, the wave length decreases as the wave height increases. In a more complicated manner, the same happens with waves associated with hurricanes, but you also have to consider the continuous pushing of the water on the shore (storm surge) and the specific shoreline/water depth of a particular area.
