We only ever hog hunted on the Tensaw river delta growing up. Dad and I both just used 30-30s. We never had a need for a scope. I've moved and though I predominately bow hunt 98% of the time, I'd like to put a scope on her see what kind of accuracy I could get. I'm looking for durability and functionality. Since it is not my primary hunting weapon I'd like to not drop a whole lot of money into it.

A Leupold 2x7 would be a good scope for a gun like that. Small, compact and light.

A good fixed 4 power. Certainly nothing larger than a 2-7ish with 36mm objective.

Look through a 2x7x33 or 35 and I think you will agree a 3x9x40 gives you a better range and FOV with a better selection and price. A 50mm lens would be good to carry to a ground stand or hut just too much to lug around and worry about tearing up. If you can wait between now and Christmas you should be able to get a Nikon for $100. I used a Tasco Pronghorn with the look thru rings for years never a problem until I dropped my gun and it got all twisted up. I think I would go back with look thru rings if I decided to spend extra $ and could find some custom machined and better sights than standard sights. Always wanted to shoot a deer with the peep type sights. Plus a non-scope sight they make now would probaby never get off like a scope can due to bumping it. Buy something better than a $100 Nikon or Tasco pronghorn mounted in cheap see-through rings and you won't have to worry about your scope being off when you bump it.

Outdoors1 seems to keep having problems with his scopes being bumped off very easily, so I made a suggestion. I've banged rifles and scopes many times through the years, even dropped one from a tree, without shifting POI. Never used see through mounts or Nikon scopes...

Never used see through mounts or Nikon scopes... i had a 7600 30-06 too set that way for a long time and never had a problem . i'd get a different set of mounts those might not be setting right and has the scope in a bind .

Don't climb a tree and drop your gun either.
