We only ever hog hunted on the Tensaw river delta growing up. Dad and I both just used 30-30s. We never had a need for a scope. I've moved and though I predominately bow hunt 98% of the time, I'd like to put a scope on her see what kind of accuracy I could get. I'm looking for durability and functionality. Since it is not my primary hunting weapon I'd like to not drop a whole lot of money into it.

I like a smaller scope on a .30-30. 7X magnification is more than enough for me @ 100yds. I almost got a fixed power but went with a Burris Fullfield II 2X - 7X 35mm in quick release rings. Great scope for the money.

I put a 3x9x40 leupold vxr firedot in talley lightweight low rings. I really like the set up and the only reason I want a scope is for low light shooting. [Linked Image]

Just curious what kind of .30-30 it is? Is it drilled and tapped for a scope?

A Leupold 2x7 would be a good scope for a gun like that. Small, compact and light.

I agree with some of the cheaper options mentioned. Another would be the Simmons 44mag.

If you could spend the money, I think this would be a nice simple scope for a gun like that. Smallish and not much to go wrong.

I believe it is a Model 336C or 335C 30-30 Win. It has two holes that I assume are for a scope base or scope rings? Maybe its not worth a scope with a 20" barrel.

A good fixed 4 power. Certainly nothing larger than a 2-7ish with 36mm objective.

I wouldn't want a 4x fixed power scope in the woods if ever got thick. I'd prefer a 2-7x but would settle for a 3x9. Either power I would want in a low ring. My 45-70 guide gun wears a 3x9x40 Nikon. I wanted a a 2-7 for it but they had the 3x9 on sale at a good price for customer appreciation day so I went with it Its held zero for 5 years now on the 45-70 and has been a good scope does pretty good in low light better then I thought it would for the price. It might give up the ghost now that I talked about it but I'd buy another one

Look through a 2x7x33 or 35 and I think you will agree a 3x9x40 gives you a better range and FOV with a better selection and price. A 50mm lens would be good to carry to a ground stand or hut just too much to lug around and worry about tearing up. If you can wait between now and Christmas you should be able to get a Nikon for $100. I used a Tasco Pronghorn with the look thru rings for years never a problem until I dropped my gun and it got all twisted up. I think I would go back with look thru rings if I decided to spend extra $ and could find some custom machined and better sights than standard sights. Always wanted to shoot a deer with the peep type sights. Plus a non-scope sight they make now would probaby never get off like a scope can due to bumping it.

Buy something better than a $100 Nikon or Tasco pronghorn mounted in cheap see-through rings and you won't have to worry about your scope being off when you bump it.

Outdoors1 seems to keep having problems with his scopes being bumped off very easily, so I made a suggestion. I've banged rifles and scopes many times through the years, even dropped one from a tree, without shifting POI. Never used see through mounts or Nikon scopes...

i had a 7600 30-06 too set that way for a long time and never had a problem . i'd get a different set of mounts those might not be setting right and has the scope in a bind .

About 10 years ago I bought the Hornady Leverolution scope that has reticles that correspond with the Hornady Leverevolution ammo to use on myMarlin 336. Using the polymer tip ammo in a tube fed gun really helped my accuracy out to 100yds. The last time I measured I was getting 1.5" groups at 100. So far I've never had an occurrence of it losing zero from being bumped or whatever, but I do not hunt with it too often any more. A decent low budget option IMO.

Don't climb a tree and drop your gun either.
