First time to plant sunn hemp at the farm. Only about 25 pounds in 4 small plots of various sizes. Low planting rate because they were mixed with soybeans. Can’t find a bean over 5 inches tall. Sunn hemp is doing well, but only light browsing. Deer probably don’t know what to do with it yet. Planted the last weekend of June. Will try to post more pictures later.

They will figure it out.. when it gets taller they will eat the leaves off the stalks to about head high.

How late does it stay green and viable as a food source? First frost?

I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. If multiple convicts are to be hanged they can choose with whom to share the gallows or names shall be drawn from the hangman's hat to be hanged 2 at a time.

Stays green until frost. At my place they don't eat it that much, probably due to the 6 acres of soybeans nearby. I plant it mainly for soil building, cover and screening

Excellent soil builder. Deer seldom eat it on our place. They have better options

When used as a food source, keeping it mowed to about 3’ is suppose to keep leafs more palatable and higher protein

Who, me? Mine at the farm is only like 3 foot tall. Planted a few much earlier in the backyard just to see what it’s like (first experience with it). It’s best to cut and let regrowth be nice and tender, right? Might do that, but mainly just an experiment to see how the deer respond to it.

I didn't mean you Joe I meant they guy standing next to the tress that are 9-10' tall. That's when sunn hemp becomes counter productive.

Those trees definitely are past their prime for feeding deer but that was not their purpose. I have beans for deer chow. That plot really needs soil improvement which is why I planted them. Lots of organic matter and nutrient creation.Usually what I use Sunn Hemp is for screening.
