I am kicking around the idea of painting the stock on my new Weatherby Vanguard select.
I've never painted a stock before so I am looking for suggestions from those that successfully have.

Here is my general gameplan
Planning on removing the sling studs & butt pad.
Scuffing the stock with 220grit followed by a grey scuff pad.
Wiping down with rubbing alcohol.
Spray adhesion promoter.
Spray several light base coats
Spray several light clear coats

I’ve painted several stocks with Cerakote. The latest was a fiberglass McMillan and they all turned out very good. All I did was wipe them down with acetone let dry and spray until I had the pattern complete

I'm going to be likely spraying from a rattle can.

I've kryloned all of my most used. My 700 what i did was take barreled receiver out tape up crown,safety,trigger and then used non chlorinated brake kleen to get all oil off,same thing with the adl stock. I taped barrel channel and then brake cleaner the entired stock wuth buttpad off. After that i hung both up and khaki kryloned for base. Dried then repeat. Then i laid pinestraw/leaves/twigs on both while on cardboard and sprayed brown,then repeat other side. Then i moved pattern abd rearranged and went olive drab. After all said and done i reinstalled everything then sighted in. I touch up when seasons change or 2 my liking. Been this way for years. True flat looking. If not careful you will lose it in woods if set up by tree when relieving yourself.

Don’t use rubbing alcohol. Use denatured alcohol.

duracoat sells their 2 part epoxy paint in a rattle can you press a button on the bottom and shake to mix the 2 parts ive finished several guns with it barrels stocks etc. its some good stuff for DIY prep work is key though.

I just rattle can sprayed my last one. HS Precision fiberglass stock, light buff with a ScotchBrite pad, wipe with denatured, taped off the recoil lug and barrel channel, spray.

I just did a base coat, then fogged other colors in a random pattern. No clear coat, all satin or flat colors.

Turned out so well, I ended up doing two different Ruger American rifles for friends.

I've rattle canned a couple things in my day. If you do a rifle most any solvent is going to break down Krylon or Rustoleum rattle can paint. I have top coated it with things like Aluma-hyde from Brownells. That stuff took about 3 months to dry for me. Might have just been the can I got.

After doing all that I would use Duracoat and I would probably get the whole kit with the stencils and everything. It is just a better system if you plan to keep the gun.

Another option may be spray on truck bed liner. Duracoat sells this in camouflage colors in a spray can. I have never used it on a stock but have used it to spray my climbing tree stands and it is tough. It does need to cure for several days to harden and heat helps this process.

This would also have a slightly textured finish and provide a good grip.

I'm actually looking at a textured paint from Rust oleum. Assuming it applies like it feels on the can lid it would be about perfect.

I rattle canned several. Plenty of your tube videos. Make sure you get flat clear coat. I used various leaves and weeds to go a camo pattern.

For sure on the clear. No one has ever complained about too much mil thickness with clear.

This is one I did a few yrs ago....it was either krylon or rustoleum, dont recall which. I cleaned and degreased everything, then wore rubber gloves. Primed it and painted. Did the primer and base coat (tan) with the stock off. Then put it together and did the od green stripes over the assembled gun. Did the brown splotches with a piece of sponge, dipping it in brown spray paint sprayed onto a paper plate and dabbing it onto the gun. Once everything was good and dry, did a few light coats of flat clear.
