After getting the gun back from the gunsmith last week, I took dad's Model 94 out to the range yesterday and wow, what a neat gun to shoot! It performed flawlessly and feels so nice to the shoulder. I probably sent 25 rounds through it and my shoulder isn't sore at all. However, I discovered that there is a learning curve to shooting the open style sights. It took several rounds to figure out that where you put the front sight in the "V" of the rear sight will greatly impact your shot placement. I also discovered that I may need a contact lens in my right eye to better focus on the front sight and I need to put a little touch of bright color on it to make it stand out a little. Through trial and error, I found that it shoots high at 30 yards and I need to hold about 3 inches low to hit dead center at that range with the front sight at the bottom of the "V." 100 yards was a little dicey but I think when I go back I'm gonna be a little better.
At any rate, I'm gonna be heading back out to the range soon and see if I can do a little better. Love this little gun though!

The older Winchester 94s are the Cadillac of lever guns.

Doc a smidge of color will do wonders@100 yards. Far as ammo I'd let the rifle show what it likes.
Only hits count.

Put some Powermax 150’s in that rig I will never shoot no damn Powermax ammo just because you have tainted them forever. I wouldn't shoot the MFs (now) if somebody gave me a ton of them for free.

Put some Powermax 150’s in that rig Yeah that horse has long been dead. Not funny anymore. First time it was. The last 10 not so much.

Dr. B Does it not have adjustable sights Doc?

Cactus Buck, we can grab a beer together at the Recovery Room next week and talk about how funny it was. I gotta run over to Cogan Custom then visit Key Tire.

Dr. B Does it not have adjustable sights Doc? Yes. The rear sight can be adjusted. Based on the velocity charts, I should be almost dead on at 100 with it a couple of inches high at 25-30 yards. I'm gonna head back out to the range this weekend and give it another go. For sure it matters where in the "V" you put that front bead. Dr. B

Doc, it's really personal preference how you line up the sights. Obviously I don't have to tell you how determine your dominant eye. But try shooting with both eyes open and effectively eliminate the rear sight from your picture. I'm not sure how to explain this in text, but focus on the front sight and let the rear become a fuzzy guide, simply to align the barrel with your line of sight. For me, personally, I like the bead the be at the top of the "V" and lollipop my target. In other words, place the bead just below the spot you want to hit. Think about the 3 dot sights on a pistol. Two dots on the rear sight, and the front sight with a single dot. All three are basically at the top of the sights.
My opinions and comments are my own. They do not reflect the position or political opinions of Aldeer or any of the Aldeer administration.

^^Thanks Outback. I've got some trial and error to do before I feel confident enough to take it to the woods.

Google is your friend on this. Do some reading on buckhorn/semi-buckhorn sight alignment. Very cool concept once you wrap your head around it. Not having to move the rear sight and shooting anywhere from point blank range to over 100yds is a really nice option to have. The ol' timers would refer to it as drawing a coarse/fine bead.
