I started this thread in February, and I wanted to resurrect it.

white flowered leafcup or Polymnia canadensis is the name of the plant as indicated above. I've got an absolute jungle of it in Jackson County, chest high in most places. I had to cut a trail through it to get to my food plot.

This also means I'll have to cut a trail to any of my stands through this mess. (round up of course to keep it away) but has anyone ever seen anything definitive about this plant? Should I make a point to try and kill it?

Lot of it growing at Monte Sano State Park, too.

Got it all my place as well. Be interested in what to do with it.

If it's thick as hell, I imagine it's reasonably good cover for fawning. Some input from someone smarter than me wouldn't hurt, but I can't imagine it's all bad, but I think it's been established that deer don't really eat it. As I said yesterday, I'll have to cut trails through it where required as you literally cannot see the ground you're walking on, which seems like a great way to twist/break an ankle and or get bit by ol' no shoulders.

Secondary concerns, if it's 3-4 feet tall and covers so much of the ground does it have a negative impact on new tree growth?

Matt I’ve seen little patches of that stuff for years but it totally took over Jackson county this past spring. Any ideas to what caused it ?
It came up so quick that it choked out a trail camera I had on an old roadbed in just a few days. Can’t even tell where the road was anymore

I’m not sure Brent. Some places it is really thick under full canopy, others it is patchy. It does really like thins and shelterwoods where there is more light getting through the canopy, but not a complete clearcut.

I got it in my mind that it was because of the late spring. Leaves were late providing canopy and shade and the extra daylight on the ground allowed that stuff to take off. Just a thought.

That is a good possibility, especially if the seed can stay viable for a long time in the soil. It can sure choke everything else out in the thick spots. It also is terrible to wade through, leaves you sticky and itchy.

It starts to thin out around late December, but it's definitely still around. I just hate wading through it.
