I planted centipede last year and it was looking really good....until today. I’ve got patches of grass that are just coming up in chunks. That’s how it’s coming up...literally in chunks. What is causing that?

Is it in a shady area. If so it might not be getting the sunlight it needs. Maybe mowing to low killed it or possibly bugs.

Could be spittlebugs or mole crickets. They can mess up a yard if left unchecked. Is the grass turning yellow or turning brown? If so, that's a fungus.

It doesn’t look like roots are attached. Just the top layer of grass and it’s dirt underneath. Like everything underneath it’s gone. Almost like small patches of sod

I would treat the yard for bugs and keep a eye on it
Probably put a fungicide out as well.

Have you sprayed your yard with roundup lately?

I just looked up a spittle bug. I did see some foamy bubble looking stuff under a post I had on the grass. I saw that on some spittlebug pics

Something be eating on them then. Go out now with a flashlight and you'll probably find what it is. Look in the areas adjacent to where you found the grass that pulled up. Spray tomorrow with something. I don't know if liquid Sevin will kill mole crickets, but if it will, it will also kill the piss out of grubs. Reaction time is critical here.... chop chop. smile

If I wait long enough. Sounds like the bugs will do it.

Unfortunately this is on land I don’t live on yet. But I will get something in the morning and spray.

Spittlebugs are black with 2 orange stripes on their back and they jump up in the air as you walk through the grass. The will mess up a yard and love centipede grass, especially a healthy lawn. I fight them every year

I’ll have to use stuff I have to mix or granules. Because I don’t have a spicket nearby. I do have a spicket on the property just not near where grass is.

Sounds like you got bugs eating the roots. How big of a yard do you have

This kills spittlebugs but it is a contact killer and has to get on them.

If you're going to spray, wait til late afternoon. Less time for the chemical to degrade or whatever the technical term is before the insects start feeding. They're gonna feed mostly at night.

That triazicide will keep them gone for the rest of the summer but needs to be watered in.

Good stuff. I put it out every spring and never have problems with ants, grubs, etc.
