Once I finally get this mower to turn over and crank, it runs fine, but the mower thinks I'm not sitting on the seat and will just CLICK, CLICK, CLICK when I try to start the engine. I've double checked the position of the steering sticks and the parking brake. It takes a lot of tries and wiggling around on the seat and bouncing up and down to get the engine to turn over.

How can I bypass this safety switch so that I can start the engine every time? (The model is John Deere Z465.) Thanks in advance for the help!

The seat switch doesn't prevent cranking. It'll crank with the seat switch disconnected, but when you release parking brake it'll shut off. However the brake switch will prevent cranking.
My guess is a bad connection to the brake switch is your problem. By wiggling around on the seat you're inadvertently making the connection to the brake switch.

You can try disconnecting the brake switch, but I'm not sure if that will work.
Check the wires and the connection. If all looks good, just replace the brake switch.
If the switch is bad, you should be seeing the orange service light when the key hits the start position.

Loop a wire in the switch and it will bypass it and tell you if its the switch.

Just occurred to me, if you're hearing a click, it may not be a sensor at all.
A sensor alarm would bypass the starter circuit and you would only hear silence.
You may have a bad starter, or solenoid.
I recently bought a new one for the Z930. The starter /solenoid is a package deal, $180 at sunsouth.

Like grumpy old out back said, Click, click, click means it is trying to start and all the safety switches are working properly.

Vernon,

Think about this a minute.

As much trouble as you have killing a deer and cooking a steak in a pan, I'm not sure you need the seat safety switch bypassed on your lawn mower. rolleyes grin

You might be better off taking it to the shop for repair. thumbup

Just a thought...

My brother-in-law also thinks it's the solenoid just from my description. Thanks for the info.

As a person who was injured in a bad lawnmower mishap in 1985, you would think I wouldn't try getting by any safety measures. I still have scars on my left foot 30+ years later.

It may be the starter relay. Do a search on that, as JD makes a shortcut part.
