Is this something you could do out of a bass boat?

Yes. Ono Island is a great place to do it.

Anything special I need to do with my boat after putting it in the salt other than washing it really well and flushing the motor with the water muffs

You got it right. Also remember it's your trailer just as much if not more than the boat itself. Is your trailer painted, galvanized, or aluminum? If it's galvanized or aluminum, just spray it off real good too when you are cleaning up the boat. If it's painted......well, I've never seen a painted trailer survive in repeated/frequent salt water use for any extended period of time.

I have fished and caught hundreds of trout around the lights of Ono Island docks. Hell, we caught them last weekend from the doc of one of my buddies houses after we got knee walking drunk. They were still biting after he fell in and I had to drag him back out.

The only caution I would give you is watch where you are running. Little Lagoon is really shallow. There are a bunch of really shallow spots around Ono, including a big one right past the Ono Island bridge were it can get down to ankle deep. Although all of that area is a no wake zone now, so you shouldn't hurt anything.

My favorite artificial is a plastic jerk bait, rigged with a bass hook and no weight. It looks like a wounded fish across the light. A free lined live shrimp or DOA comes in at a close second.

I got nothing to add that hadn’t already been advised but good luck and have fun. thumbup

Me and my buddies have fished dock lights in a 26’ boat. It’s a lot of fun and some damn good eating. It’s also now a lot easier now in 18’ Carolina Skiff.

Dont forget to spray trolling motor down with a good lubricant after washing down. You can also buy salt away at J&M.

Gulp shrimp and the Savage 3D shrimp also produce.

If you fish the side of Ono next to the channel, anchoring may be a challenge. I've seen the current there run 5-6 knots or more. About 6' of chain on the anchor helps it bite.

"Cull" is just another four letter word...

When you get tired of fishing go pick up a cheap flounder light and a gig and ease around those same docks closer to shore and hunt for flounder. Stand on the front and pole around with backend of spear then flip it over and jab em. One of my favorite things to do on the water at night.

Check the rear seal on your lower units on your outboard and any seals on your TM before you go. Salt ain't nice and will ruin a boat.

They make a saltwater inhibitor that you pre-treat your boat/motor/trailer with. It helps keep the salt from bonding, makes it much easier to wash afterwards. I use to use it on my bayboat. Also, if your reels don't have stainless ball-bearings, you will have trouble from them later on as well. doesn't hurt to pre-treat them also.

Anything worth doing, is worth doing right, or it's not worth doing at all!
