If I'm not throwing artificials, all I use for big trout and reds are live croakers 4-8" free lined or mullet the same size. For me, those two baits in that size range weed out most of the catfish and trash that you'll catch on smaller baits or menhaden. I've caught literally thousands of schoolie trout 1-4 lbs and even some good ones on menhaden and live shrimp but if you want to target the better quality fish, big mullet or croakers are the way to go. Now if you're fishing Dixie Bar, or down around the Destin bridge and jetties, you can jump up to 12-14" croakers and mullet and still be fine on the reds. Biggest trout I ever caught ate a 8-9" mullet free-lined. Damn 12 inches? If I have 12-14 inch croakers, I'm not wasting them on a bull red, I am filleting them..very good eating

I've heard them called Ronkers, too... Why thank you sir. See, that's how you do that!

Catch one and you'll know why they call them croakers. I don't think that there are many of them in the TN or Coosa rivers.

When my dad was stationed in Corpus Christi, we fished many, many afternoons. I caught more croakers than I could have possibly counted. Great fun for a 10 year old. To everyone down there, they were trash fish and only fit for bait. Filled up many a crab net with cut bait croaker. Several weeks ago I ate at The Fish Market in Downtown B'ham and they were selling croaker in the market part as food fish. That is truly the first time I have ever seen them considered edible. Now, according to y'all, my dad and I threw away good eating. Oh well, I can remember when Amberjack were trash fish. Find a way to cook it and I guess the perception of any fish can change.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

We've eaten croakers as long as I can remember...since back in the mid-60's or so. They're great bait, everything eats them, but if they're big enough, they get cleaned and fried!
