The honest truth...............because big leaguers with more money than sense do as a display of their ghettoness. Since they do it, it looks like the thing to do to younger players. For some, a few, it is a simple superstition, of which baseball players are the most superstitious in the sports world.

One reason I can't watch baseball is the batter stepping out of the box after every pitch and adjusting his gloves, helmet, etc. Its silly and just bores the hell out of me.

Haven't noticed any on any of the European soccer league players.

My question is why they all seem to be growing mullets. Mullets are making a comeback. 2 kids at work had them recently... one complete with stripes and all.

And why in the hell does the coach wear a uniform? Is he on the roster? Baseball from high school, college and professionally are the only sport that I know of that the coach wears a uniform. Why not khakis, collared polo shirt and athletic shoes. Something similar to the umpires.
Back on track. The constant backing out of the batters box after every pitch and re Velcroing the gloves drives me crazy.

I would assume the coaches wearing a uniform was from when the managers also played. I believe Pete Rose was the last to play and manage at the same time and that was about 30 years ago. As far as adjusting the gloves, a fast ball to the ear hole would make them forget they even had gloves on. Get in the box and play ball! Can't remember the rule but not many years ago they were only suppose to be given only a few seconds then a strike would be called. It was an effort to speed up the game.

There is a reason for the gloves thing and I was as bad about this as anyone. I wanted them to be as tight on my hand as possible. If they weren't it just didn't feel right. After every pitch the velcro would loosen some so they required tightening again. Same reason I just didn't feel comfortable unless I hit the bottom of my spikes with the bat before stepping into the box. I did these things without even thinking about them. It is just a habit. You just want to feel comfortable.

Exactly....Hitting a baseball isn't exactly easy. The only way to do it consistently is to make everything about it muscle memory. having the same "routine" every time just helps reinforce consistency.

But if the umpires would start penalizing the batters for their unneeded routines at an earlier age and let those penalties follow them right on up they would be a thing of the past in a few years. If I am watching a baseball game I have no interest in watching a bunch of players scratching their junk, beating their cleats, playing with their gloves, stepping out of the batters box and other time killers. I can honestly say it's never stood out at me enough to even notice. Maybe you just don't really like baseball? I do wish they'd do away with all the instant replay, electronic strike zone, etc. When you take that much of the human element out of it, it just gets bland.

Regiment, superstition, and sometimes strategy.
Depending on who is delivering the pitch, priority may be given to any one of those factors at any point during an at bat. Some pitchers like to keep a higher frequency of pitches; slowing that down by making adjustments, or implementing "superstitious" actions can mess his regiment up and therefore his pitches, potentially allowing a good hit.

I say 2 outs per inning, 7 innings max then no extra innings.
