Somebody who enjoys coming to work, likes the people they work with, won’t go looking for another job or be as willing to switch jobs for an extra 5k a year. That’s how you keep labor costs down. Have good leadership and a bunch of people with good attitudes. A grouchy complainer will ruin a good workplace. Kids today come to work looking for another job. They think you should give them a manager position right out of college. If they don't get $100k a year and 6 weeks vacation, they'll spend half the work day submitting resumes for their next job. I agree to a point with what you've said. But at the same time gone are the days of the majority of the workforce getting hired by a company, staying there 35 years and collecting a pension. Interesting article about staying vs leaving. https://www.forbes.com/sites/camero...n-2-years-get-paid-50-less/#4e18d8eae07fAgree with AU7. The days of working for The Man for 30-40 years and getting the attaboy, gold watch and pension are over. Today's graduates and older, ages 22 to about 35 +/-, have no problem staying at a job for a year, 18 months, and then leaving. Some do it because the job is sh*t and they - like many of us - took it to get any kind of money, get something on the resume-ledger and then move on. Some get jobs and find out they're not what they were advertised to be. Many just move around because they can - in today's digital-tech world people move around. Managers know this and don't fret about it because they know someone else can and will come along. It's no big whoop. They adapt, adjust and move ahead. Some jobs, of course, require training and IMO those are the ones where a longer commitment is more valuable, looks better on the resume and can be a plus. It would depend on what I was hiring for as to whether I'd be looking for someone with x-years at Jobs A and B or shorter times at multiple places but they had solid to above-average levels of success at most or all. I'd rather hire a solid person who bounced around a little but had success, knowing he/she might move on, than to hire some schlub who sat on his or her ass for 8 or 10 years at Company A and was average.

Everybody wants skilled labor. Somebody has to train these people the companies are going to have to go to more apprenticeship programs and pay a man enough to live on while he is being trained. A 19 year old still living at home can get by on $10 hr for a little while if he knows there is better money comming as he learns more. A man with a wife and kids can not get by on that he will need more and will need to see a pay scale that shows how much more he is going to be making in 6 months 1 year 5 years etc.
If you're gonna be stupid you better be tough.

Every branch will be happy to house and feed a family.

Hell we are basically paying an average of $12-13 an hr for labor to run a weedeater edger and blower. Still can’t find anyone to work. Ahhh NO! Aint no way I'd run a weed eater for $12 an hour! That's what roundup is for. Me either the hell with that 4-5 years ago $8.75-9 was average. Problem is everything is going up except our prices. You go up you loose work. Yeah, haven't went up on most prices in two years. I have a guy, college student, working with me. He's a good worker and I've told him I'd like to pay him more, but in our competitive market there's just not enough meat on the bone. I try to do little things to show him he's appreciated. Always have extra gatorade in the cooler for him, buy his lunch on Fridays, let him borrow my tools,...
Sig Sauer, to hell and back reliable.
Whatever suits you just tickles me plum to death.
Can I refill your eggnog for you? Get you something to eat? Drive you out to the middle of nowhere and leave you for dead?

The trouble with the military is that most of there careers don't directly cross into the civilian world. Usually you need to complete some other training after you get out to get whatever type of certification you need. And a lot of them just don't cross over at all. I been in two diffrent branches in one capacity or another since 1987. They will however help you pay for college and in the Air Force anyway absolutely require you to go to college to advance. Also only about 30% of 18-25 year olds can even qualify to join the military.

The Air Force offers some of most, and best, real world training. But you are, correct that it takes a better than average high school kid to get in the Air Force. They don't take just any idiot with a GED.

There's pretty good money to be made in the Industry if you are motivated and get licensed. I make 40,000-45,000 a year plus 15% commission on everything i do plus it's a fun job

The quality of help we are getting where I work is the worst I've ever seen. Just getting them to show up AND on time is an accomplishment.

I mean, I know lots of recent HS grads & young adults are lazy, but wow... That's actually true for the Air Force. Maybe a little higher for Navy and Marines. Of course anybody can get into the Army, with a pulse and a single digit IQ. But the ASVAB tests will weed out 60% of Air Force enlistees.

Legit curious:
What's the age range of these guys y'all are hiring who are quitting and what's the job(s)? And are they white, Hispanic, black? How long do they stay before quitting?
Bigger question: Why do y'all think these guys are quitting?
Not because 'they don't make men anymore' or anything like that. I get all that, but let's go deeper.
Is it the pay? They're legitimately lazy? They signed on but didn't realize exactly what the job was? Did they feed you guys (who are hiring) a line of bullchit about working hard and willing to do anything?
