The honest truth...............because big leaguers with more money than sense do as a display of their ghettoness. Since they do it, it looks like the thing to do to younger players. For some, a few, it is a simple superstition, of which baseball players are the most superstitious in the sports world.

One reason I can't watch baseball is the batter stepping out of the box after every pitch and adjusting his gloves, helmet, etc. Its silly and just bores the hell out of me.

Haven't noticed any on any of the European soccer league players.

My question is why they all seem to be growing mullets. Mullets are making a comeback. 2 kids at work had them recently... one complete with stripes and all.

And why in the hell does the coach wear a uniform? Is he on the roster? Baseball from high school, college and professionally are the only sport that I know of that the coach wears a uniform. Why not khakis, collared polo shirt and athletic shoes. Something similar to the umpires.
Back on track. The constant backing out of the batters box after every pitch and re Velcroing the gloves drives me crazy.

I would assume the coaches wearing a uniform was from when the managers also played. I believe Pete Rose was the last to play and manage at the same time and that was about 30 years ago. As far as adjusting the gloves, a fast ball to the ear hole would make them forget they even had gloves on. Get in the box and play ball! Can't remember the rule but not many years ago they were only suppose to be given only a few seconds then a strike would be called. It was an effort to speed up the game.

There is a reason for the gloves thing and I was as bad about this as anyone. I wanted them to be as tight on my hand as possible. If they weren't it just didn't feel right. After every pitch the velcro would loosen some so they required tightening again. Same reason I just didn't feel comfortable unless I hit the bottom of my spikes with the bat before stepping into the box. I did these things without even thinking about them. It is just a habit. You just want to feel comfortable.

Exactly....Hitting a baseball isn't exactly easy. The only way to do it consistently is to make everything about it muscle memory. having the same "routine" every time just helps reinforce consistency.

But if the umpires would start penalizing the batters for their unneeded routines at an earlier age and let those penalties follow them right on up they would be a thing of the past in a few years. If I am watching a baseball game I have no interest in watching a bunch of players scratching their junk, beating their cleats, playing with their gloves, stepping out of the batters box and other time killers. I can honestly say it's never stood out at me enough to even notice. Maybe you just don't really like baseball? I do wish they'd do away with all the instant replay, electronic strike zone, etc. When you take that much of the human element out of it, it just gets bland.

Regiment, superstition, and sometimes strategy.
Depending on who is delivering the pitch, priority may be given to any one of those factors at any point during an at bat. Some pitchers like to keep a higher frequency of pitches; slowing that down by making adjustments, or implementing "superstitious" actions can mess his regiment up and therefore his pitches, potentially allowing a good hit.

Man...imagine how good Mickey Mantle could have been if he had taken part in these glove tightening rituals after every pitch...or even wore batting gloves.

Baseball sucks anyway. Slow and boring. Ben2 has a good idea with 2 outs and 7 innings. They should add random non-lethal confetti explosions in the outfield.

I would rather see them lookin' like Flava Flave than sporting a danged FLAT BILL HAT I hate that and then there are the ones that have it turned 90 degrees on the side of their heads. But then again I played for a coach that if he saw you with a ball cap on backwards you had better be a catcher. If you weren't a catcher then you spent time as one catching batting practice, which wasn't fun.

I rarely watch baseball, but just watched the first inning and a half of the Sox/Mariners game on MLB Network. Out of about 12 batters so far, exactly ONE of them has re-tightened his batting gloves, and he did it ONCE with a full count on him, then struck out. That's it. It's pee-wee league crap that I'm still trying to figure out how it got started. They still have pine tar, btw.

Did they even have batting gloves when he played?

Did they even have batting gloves when he played? No, as I stated in my post before that. Point is, you don't see the pros really doing it that much...only occasionally. It's these pee-wee league players that have picked it up from somewhere and now think they have to do it after every dang pitch. Some of their fathers apparently think it's a "thing", though.

Sure blame the umpires.....when league presidents& commissioner have the real power. Fine the players? Sure that $5000.00 fine matters to a guy making 20 million a year. Baseball is meant to be counted by outs not time.

Why do you people hate America???
....commies
Kinda what I was thinking. If thinking baseball is one of the biggest wastes of time in America makes one a commie then I am a comrad.

Sure blame the umpires.....when league presidents& commissioner have the real power. Fine the players? Sure that $5000.00 fine matters to a guy making 20 million a year. Baseball is meant to be counted by outs not time. If you are on a schedule, don't go to a baseball game. Y'all forgot to complain about the necessary package adjustment that has to be made while on national TV too.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

Who said he didn't step out between pitches? What he didn't do is readjust dang batting gloves after every single pitch.
.
Did they even have batting gloves when he played? Nope, they did not.

I can get past the caps with flatter bills (as long as they wear them straight)...........but I HATE the baggy pants. Baseball pants should be worn pulled up to just below the knee, with socks showing.
I'm glad to see it seems to be making a comeback.

Chains are illegal in all levels below college technically. Some umps enforce it and some do not. There are only a few players in the game that ACTUALLY slow the pace of play down enough to matter between pitches and it is typically counteracted by pitchers who take less than average time between pitches. Surely it cant be that big of a deal whether or not someones cap bill is straight of curved...
Shortening the game is all well and good but if you shorten the game you always take away the essence of baseball.
When the game gets shortened it decreases the number of pitches thrown in a game. If you reduce number of pitches you allow for a single pitcher to dominate a game which in turn takes away a lot of those chances for late inning comebacks and lessening the value of a complete game being thrown by a single pitcher. This in turn waters down how good guys like Nolan Ryan and Sandy Koufax really were (for all you traditionalist out there). You also take the role of relief pitcher/ pinch hitter/ defensive replacements out of the game entirely. Now less kids can play in the game and we all know that NO parent will stand for their baby not making the team. Over time the game of baseball loses more and more kids to Lacrosse and Commie ball ( soccer ) because more kids get a chance to play and Americas pass time becomes extinct.
Its an endless paradox of mayhem that would change the game in more ways than just Time!!
I say NAY !!!

Unfortunately, some people lose their sh*t about this and wearing it backwards as if it's some kind of lost moral compass sending baby seals to their deaths and creating a fissure in the world order. Ain't that big of a deal. I'm watching the US Open and Jimmy Walker is teeing off. He's wearing a flat-brim cap. HOW DARE HE BESMIRCH THE SANCTITY OF THE LEGACY OF GOLF!!!

Y’all realize that the average time for a MLB game on TV was 3:05 and that was a record high set in 2017. The average college football game on TV takes 3:24 Not to mention that a football game only has about 10 min of actual live ball play time.

Yeah, but football's better. Twenty more minutes is fine.

The average college football game on TV takes 3:24 Besides the fact that it's infinitely more interesting to watch than baseball, college football's time includes a 20 minute halftime. College football used not to take nearly as long, until they changed the clock rules back in 2007-ish. Ironically, it was said that the new clock rules (40 second clock instead of 25) were put into place to shorten the length of games. Unbeknownst to many, Mike Belotti was the chariman of the rules committee, and he had just hired Chip Kelly as his offensive coordinator to take full advantage of that new clock rule. Needless to say, games are even longer today than they were pre-2007.
