I keep hearing about how great the job market is and how under our current leadership in Alabama there are jobs aplenty, yet the two year college system (a world I know much better than other work areas) is downsizing us left and right. 22 full time employees were dismissed last year at our college in a big downsizing, and Bevill State CC is threatening about the same number this year. You can't claim to be a "jobs administration" when you're putting so many folk out of work. To me the education system will be downsizing from now on. I just do not see the need for huge campuses and bias teachers. Skilled laborers are what is needed currently not educated employees with 12 years of colledge/grad school. So much information is online anyone can learn it if they want to. I would think online schools will be the way of the future. Kind of like all these new huge libraries being built, why does anyone need a library with so much information online??

Y'all are doing good then. I worked at an oil change in high school, and the numbers I saw every day weren't near enough to cover that kind of payroll. Must be a lot of mechanic work. Lots of brakes and front ends. Plus we do tires from wheel barrows up to mining equipment.

There is a difference in having jobs in general and having jobs where there are people to fill them.
Let's look at what is wrong with our own State and take the example... any small town in Alabama. There are highway construction jobs in B'ham that need workers. 1,000 openings.
What does that do for a 22 year old guy in a place like Union Springs for example.
Not much. It is tough for someone living in poverty to move from a place like that to a big city and get a job, etc. Just think about being in their shoes. Prior to Welfare people would have to move. Such as during the Depression or during WWII people moved to get jobs with something like the TVA or moved to California to work in textiles, etc. In 2018 they don't have to move... they can sit right there and get singed up for a check every month, etc. Hang out and just pick up some odd jobs for a little side cash or try to sell drugs, etc.
That's why there are plenty of openings in my mind. I don't know how to fix it other than turning off the money.
Now in that same example you could probably go back to 1950 and take a list of job opportunities in any small town that would pay a decent wage that a person could live on. I bet that list would be fairly significant.
Today... you just can't get by working at McDonalds and there are not many other jobs.
The situation is complex and our own fault. We put ourselves in this situation by not being prepared for a new era of work force, automation, technology, etc.

This. I hear the same things from my customers but they don’t realize that even 15 an hour for a basic laborer is low for the current market. Amazon fulfillment centers (among other big companies) are offering close to that if not more for order pullers. Why would anyone want to sweat their azz off on a job site in the summer when you can work in a semi air conditioned warehouse. Plus anyone with actual skills in the construction fields can just about name their wage right now. Just the current market trend that employers need to adapt to for now. The pendulum will swing back eventually and labor rates will slide back.

Hell we are basically paying an average of $12-13 an hr for labor to run a weedeater edger and blower. Still can’t find anyone to work.

I absolutely believe that. It's the main reason why a lot of folks think college makes all the difference (at least if you have a degree in something good). Without education, people don't value you.

The unemployment rate and welfare participation rate trendlines should move in the same direction IMO. If unemployment is low and you have a surplus of jobs then the number of people receiving government assistance should be reduced to a trickle. There is no reason to be subsidizing people when there is an abundance of work available.

Y'all that are downing $30k /year with benefits are forgetting about the $10k Tax refund. That's $40k w/ Benefits. And if folks would stick that Tax Windfall in the bank for emergencies instead of a couple new IPhones, a 60" flat screen and new wheels and a lift for the truck, they could have a little savings.
Where the heck did you learn tax law? That's something no one has ever come up with.

Somebody who enjoys coming to work, likes the people they work with, won’t go looking for another job or be as willing to switch jobs for an extra 5k a year. That’s how you keep labor costs down. Have good leadership and a bunch of people with good attitudes. A grouchy complainer will ruin a good workplace. Kids today come to work looking for another job. They think you should give them a manager position right out of college. If they don't get $100k a year and 6 weeks vacation, they'll spend half the work day submitting resumes for their next job.

I agree to a point with what you've said. But at the same time gone are the days of the majority of the workforce getting hired by a company, staying there 35 years and collecting a pension. Interesting article about staying vs leaving. https://www.forbes.com/sites/camero...n-2-years-get-paid-50-less/#4e18d8eae07f

In Central Florida the going rate for unskilled labor in construction is $18/hr. If you can so much as shove a roller in and out of forward/reverse without running over somebody once a day you can get $21. A semi skilled grader operator gets $33 all day long.
