Corn is just a grass that has been hybridized over time to what we have today. Look at a corn stalk and it looks remarkably similar to a blade of Bermuda grass.

Grass, broadleaf, legume…………corn, squash, bean

I’m playing around with some small three sister plantings in the garden this year. Just thought it would be cool to do. I’ve thrown another sister into the mix and added tomatoes as well. Gotta have me some maters..... I’ve been struggling to get my squash to sprout with the cool soil temps though. I finally have some just popping the ground after replanting…. These are the first mounds I started. I’ve got a whole line of mounds running down the fence…I think nine total. I’m starting another mound every 7-10 days to stagger out the harvest. We’ll see how it turns out.

One of the mistakes people make with the 3 sisters is to use fast growing modern variety beans and squash which over take the corn before it gets going good. You want the corn to basically get a head start on the other two. Also, dont over weed the garden. I know its frustrating to let weeds grow in your garden but the weeds actually help and the squash will eventually shade the bad weeds out

Couldn’t you just wait a couple weeks to plant the fast growing beans/squash?

The general directions I'm following for a garden planting says to let your corn get up to 6 inches or so and then start your beans.....wait another week and then start your squash. That's exactly what I did on the corn and beans but I'm a little behind on my squash....the first planting failed due to cool temps. I think it'll be ok though....the squash is serving the role of ground cover. I think it's still got plenty of time to fill in that gap. If you were planting this in a food plot then I think you would pretty much have to plant it all at the same time.

If for a food plot, I agree it would all need to be at the same time. Might need to look at growth rates in that case.

You can match up a number of combinations for food plots……For example milo for your grass, sunflowers for a broadleaf, and cowpeas for a legume……..or you might go with millet, buckwheat, and soybeans……..Just stick with the concept of grass, broadleaf legume…..this is the same thing I’m doing with my rotations in the T&M thread……cereal rye, turnips, clover……grass, broadleaf, legume…..

I didn't plant "the three sisters" this summer, but I'm experimenting with a T&M warm season plot that's a mix of grain sorghum, sunflowers, forage beans, iron clay peas and buckwheat. I checked it today and the BW is up and doing well. a few peas and beans, and some milo. As expected, the sunflowers have mainly been eaten by deer. It's a 2.5 acre plot and still the sunflowers are pretty well gnawed down. Good thing I included the sorghum for the peas/beans to climb. I'll take some pics as soon as we get some more rain, which I hope is soon, as it is DRY down here.

Yeah, it's gotten bad dry here. Hope you get some more rain on it in the next few days.
