There are rumors, and there are facts. I have not heard word of them confirming any more yet, and would know shortly after they did.

I think it's happening in and around the lock 5/greene county steam plant area. I've seen more dead deer down there than I ever have anywhere I bet ive found 10+since December and haven't seen a live one fishing down there in a couple years

We will burn that bridge when we get there

That's great to know Matt. No news is the best news in this case. Hopefully it stays very very quiet.

If you see a deer fishing, that would be impressive. Please take photos or video.

From the MDWFP Director posted on their website and other places:

"Over 1,400 white-tailed deer samples have been collected in Mississippi since October 1, 2017; 574 of those deer samples were collected from Mississippi's 25-mile Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) Management Zone which encompasses Claiborne, Hinds, Issaquena, Sharkey, Warren, and Yazoo Counties.

"Only one deer has tested positive for CWD which was collected on January 25, 2018, in Issaquena County. The deer was a 4.5-year-old male that died of natural causes and was reported to the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks (MDWFP). Recently, a secondary test on tissue from the CWD positive buck was returned further confirming the deer was CWD positive. To date, all other deer samples from Mississippi submitted for testing have been returned as not detected for CWD.

"In addition, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) has sampled deer within the portion of the 25-mile CWD Management Zone which lies across the Mississippi River. All tests submitted by LDWF were returned as not detected for CWD."

Is this spreading because of natural deer movement or because people are bringing deer in? If its because people are bringing deer in, I have to ask why? (newb question, but I can't figure)

From CWD info website at www.cwd-info.org.
It is not known exactly how CWD is transmitted. The infectious agent may be passed in feces, urine or saliva. Transmission is thought to be lateral (from animal to animal). Although maternal transmission (from mother to fetus) may occur, it appears to be relatively unimportant in maintaining epidemics. The minimal incubation period between infection and development of clinical disease appears to be approximately 16 months. The maximal incubation period is unknown, as is the point at which shedding of the CWD agent begins during the prolonged course of infection.

Because CWD infectious agents are extremely resistant in the environment, transmission may be both direct and indirect. Concentrating deer and elk in captivity or by artificial feeding probably increases the likelihood of both direct and indirect transmission between individuals. Contaminated pastures appear to have served as sources of infection in some CWD epidemics. The apparent persistence of the infectious agents in contaminated environments represents a significant obstacle to eradication of CWD from either captive or free-ranging cervid populations.

The movement of live animals is one of the greatest risk factors in spreading the disease into new areas. Natural movements of wild deer and elk contribute to the spread of the disease, and human-aided transportation of both captive and wild animals greatly exacerbates this risk factor. The apparent spread of CWD between captive and wild cervids is a matter of hot debate. Although strong circumstantial evidence suggests that CWD has spread from positive captive elk to wild cervids in some instances, it may never be proven which group of animals represents the source of infection. It is likely that the disease has been passed in both directions (from captive to wild animals, and from wild to captive animals).

WildlifeBiologist - thanks for the info. I wonder if baiting will have a impact on the spread; certainly seems that way from the info.

Baiting can accelerate disease spread if/when CWD is found in a herd.

It has seemed to me since the identification of prions being concentrated in the brain/spinal cord area that the most likely mode of transportation of the prions was hunters killing infected deer, hauling the heads/racks back and the brain/spinal cord matter being cut into at some point. The infected bone chips and other matter can't be 100% removed IMHO and that could lead to transmission of prions. Seems more likely than feeding a bunch of non-infected deer and them passing the disease that isn't there in the first place.

I got an email today from MDWF still stating only one case of CWD.

D+DH mag reported CWD in a Montanna Mule deer...said it was not a matter of if but when it would show up.

currently that is only a theory as there has not been any incidences of CWD ACTUALLY being transmitted in that manner.
