Nice Jeep you should be happy with it. I have an 05 TJ with the 4.0 and six speed manual transmission with 102,000 miles on it. The upgrades I have done so far is a front and rear bumper. And some mud tires. The tires make it where you can’t have a phone conversation while driving which I like.
Let them walk ...and grow them big

When I was doing a lot of research on TJ's several years back, before buying one for dad, JeepForum.com was a very useful forum - particularly the "TJ Tech Forum".
If you need ideas on how to spend money on it, I'd suggest starting with:
2.5" coil lift Tummy Tuck (raises the transmission/transfer case up flush with frame rails) flat skid plate 1" body lift and motor mount lift (required for the tummy tuck) SYE and CV drive shaft 33" tires rear locker
That should get you virtually anywhere you could possibly want to go.

Just out of curiosity - what would that cost, ballpark? well, you can spend as much as you want on some things, like a lift. For a daily driver, I'd probably spend more for a higher-end brand like OME. For a weekend/hunting toy, I'd go with something like Rough Country or the like. You might spend $400-500 on the coil lift, a few hundred on the body/motor mount lift, $500-600 on a SYE kit and a CV drive shaft, few hundred on the skid plate, $200-300 on the rear locker and then whichever tires you wanted. So, assuming you do the labor yourself (jeeps are easy to work on), maybe $1500-2000 + the cost of tires of your choosing.

Which is why I keep saying these people spending $20k on a Ranger/Razr/Canam SxS are crazy.....
You can buy a nice TJ for $6-8k, spend $3500 in lift/mods/tires and it will be a badass offroad machine for $10k or less......and you don't have to trailer it everywhere you go.
A TJ on 33's with a rear locker and a decent-flexing suspension will go virtually anywhere.

Cost 500 for new gears,480 to have them installed. 1300 for a larger spline axle with arb air locker, led lights 380, air compressor 278,1300 for tires,300 for offroad bumper mounted lights. Yes it's expensive to fix one up
Two roads diverged in the woods and I took the one with deep ruts, hills and mud.It may be bumpy but WHAT A RIDE!

Yes it's expensive to fix one up Yeah, if you're planning on running 35's or bigger, then to "do it right", you are looking at significantly more money.............re-gearing, upgrade the brakes, more lift and/or tube fenders. Also, if you have the Dana 30 rear axle, you're better off upgrading it to a D44. Running 35's on a D30 is just asking for trouble if you plan on doing any real off-roading. Even chromoly shafts only helps so much....those axles just don't hold up to any real abuse. 35's are nice on a Jeep, but in my personal opinion, the marginal benefit of 1" extra ground clearance under the axles just isn't worth the added expense.

Rustys offroad sells a long arm kit for those jeeps that will flex like crazy and still have good road manners.. Keep an eye on the offroad forums and score a set of the Rubicon axles for sale and that'll really put you in the game

May even have to call a toyota to get you out Which brings me to my next suggestion........a replacement front bumper with a Harbor Freight Winch - can realistically do both for around $500ish
