Skinny, if I may, I know many of you are aware by now, that CWD has been confirmed in a seemingly wild deer in the MS Delta. That hits rather close to home. There has been a thread started by Skinny, to address the issue and see what plans there may be to deal with the problem if, or when, it is detected in our home state. I have attached a link to the AL DCNR response plan, as written in 2013. The plan clearly addresses what the state's response would be in an affected area. The reason I want you each to take the time to read this is to understand the reasoning for any actions that are taken if a positive sample is confirmed. Also, if you read this, you will not be surprised by any actions taken. Currently, I am not aware of any legislative changes that are on the table to combat CWD, but I am fairly certain there will be discussions about the response plan based on the latest reports coming out of MS. If any changes or amendments are necessary an updated version will be published or made available. In addition to this response plan we currently, and have been for the last several years, collect samples from wild deer including road kills, hunter harvested and suspect deer. Road kills are an important segment to tests for potential disease because they are more susceptible to road mortality while ill. Suspect deer are any deer showing signs of neurological distress or illness. Typically, in the buck segment, these deer are suffering from pedicle damage or a brain abscess. None-the-less, even with clinical symptoms of a brain abscess these deer are still tested. Hunter harvested deer make up the remaining samples. The target is 100 deer per district. Some years we reach this goal, and others we do not. It takes a lot of hours and days, among other responsibilities, to collect, label, and store these samples. I would assume there could be a greater effort at surveillance in my near future. I believe the most important step to dealing with this problem is EARLY detection. I wanted you, as hunters and sportsmen and women, to be aware of the effort being made by the DCNR to detect CWD. DCNR Response Plan

Good read. Thank you. One question. Was the deer found to have cwd in Mississippi within 50 miles of the state line?

When people find dead deer around water in Aug-Oct we have always assumed EHD and thought nothing of it. Do these deer need to be tested? Is there other signs to tell the difference between CWD and EHD when a deer is in it's last days. I've watched some videos of CWD deer near death and they look and act alot like an EHD deer that is dying. It seems they both seek water etc.

It was not within 50 miles of the AL/MS line. It was in Issaquena Co in the lower delta. Just looked it up and its in the southwestern part of the state. thanks

The problem with summer time EHD outbreaks is timing. If samples can be taken they are. Often times they have decomposed so badly from heat and summer humidity that samples are not even an option.

Does the Alabama department of conservation have any interest in being contacted by individuals about fresh road killed deer or have any interest in individuals collecting fresh road killed deer and them being frozen to be picked up by G&F biologist? The technical assistance biologist in each district is leading the collection efforts. I’m not sure how each district operates but I’ve certainly received calls from the public and county officers to report deer to collect. I’ve collected quite a few that way. It also has to be within a reasonable distance. I would get deer heads from the county I was currently working in or if it was on my way back to my Home county. We only have so many people collecting deer heads and usually the closest one to that location handles it. It’s best to collect the samples within a day or two of the deer getting run over, and with it warming up now the same day is best. That’s the tough part on road kills. We have to fit taking those samples into our other duties.

I just now saw this. Thank you Matt. I am just worried that when it is detected here, which we know it will eventually be detected is that the DCNR, legislature, etc... will do something very heavy handed that makes hunting no fun for anybody anymore.

Don't think it would be a bad idea to change the "50 mile rule" to " cwd found in states bordering Alabama" This would be an unnecessary over-complication of the rule already in effect, which prohibits importation from any state with confirmed CWD, of which there are two dozen and two Canada provinces.

It would be nice if there was a field test kit that hunters or processors can do themselves.

Just wondering why the dnc would focus on trying to collect deer heads from roadkills within a small time frame when there are literally thousands of deer processors that would probably be more than willing to give you as many as you need? They keeps records of whos deer they are processing and if one came back positive finding out location of kill would only be a phone call away.

This is the "50 mile rule" I was talking about. If it's worth a chit or not really doesn't matter. If it helps why not start now? If it doesn't what difference does it make? D. Response for Out-of-State Detection within 50 miles and 5 miles of the Alabama Border: If CWD is detected in an adjacent state within 50 miles of an Alabama border, the primary objectives of the response effort will be to: a) increase CWD surveillance of those areas within Alabama that are nearest the out-of- state endemic area b) communicate and coordinate with the public and other agencies on issues related to CWD and the actions being taken by WFF.
