2Dogs - in your area some deer were stocked in the Franklin State Forest but probably more on Arnold AFB and the Wisconsin deer went into Prentice Cooper. That's what my relatives have always said and Grandfather worked for the State part time for the AG dept at that time and farmed full time. They had NO deer through there after the depression and they all talked about it a lot especially when there were enough to start eating crops. There was not much cover between Woods Res and Sewanee I have seen deer trade back and forth through there myself. And that would have been 30 years ago. Our place was closer towards Huntland and they put some deer on the fish hatchery over there off 64 HWY and I have seen with my own 2 eyes deer trade back and forth from there to Elora and go into the mountains on that side I'd say if you saw a good buck at New Hope that would be suspect. Again that was 30-35 years ago.
Look at the deer from Clarke County they stocked on the AL side and look at the deer in the pictures. You can decide for yourself but I got an opinion. I might be wrong but that's what I've seen and have been told. And makes better sense to me looking at the horns.

Those two places are quite a distance from most of Jackson Co. I thought when you said Franklin Co. you meant south of Winchester on Carter Mt. ( Cumberland Mt). Now if TN had released some there they might have influenced Alabama. I'm not buying what you're selling for sure now. If you're talking just 30 years ago Skyline, PRV, eastern Madison, and much of central Jackson was covered up with deer. You really think deer released in the two areas you cited influenced the two Eastern Madison Co studs posted recently?

Based on what I have seen when you compare the deer killed today with those we killed 30+ years ago.. early 80's when I was hunting all over Jackson Co. I hunted Clear Creek, Jacob's Mtn. Skyline and family property on Maxwell. I'm going to say the TN herd has had some influence.
Whatever you want to believe is fine by me. I could not care less it is just my opinion and I may very well be wrong. If those genetics look like they came from South Alabama to you go with it. They don't to me.
Franklin Forest is at Sherwood and you could roll a wheelchair from Elora, TN into Madison Co. Sewanee is the same bunch of mountains.
I have confirmed one thing though... to have such a strong opinion you sure as hail don't know what you are talking about.

The theory you're laying out and I don't know what I'm talking bout, that's rich. I'll lay this fact out there, bucks are living longer now , they can express their antler traits better. I bet $ y'all didn't kill many 4 YO plus deer on Clear Creek 30 years ago (BTW, those Clear Creek deer were released across the road on the Jones Farm.) Nobody did. Every now and then a stud would live long enough to get big. The deer released in Jackson came from I believe 3 locations in LA, they didn't live long there either. Do we really know what they would look like with good soil and age? I'd say they are in better Terra now also. If we're gonna deal in far fetched, outside influence theories , I'll give a couple. Could be native genes, how about Redstone/Wheeler, heck I'll cast a wide net , Bankhead. Or it could be LA genes as stated above, just better chow and age now. I've been 50 years in the hollers and mountains of PRV Skyline area , bring your wheelchair I'd like to see that show.

What's not rich is your stubborn logic. The mountain range is shared on both sides of the State line. They stocked both sides. One with S. Alabama Genetics and one with Oklahoma and Texas.
You are killing some toads up in there 40-50 whatever number you want to put on it years later with characteristics that don't appear to me to be typical of S. Alabama deer.
There is no overlap?
I think I know what happened. Before the Internet was readily available the deer must have been using Google Maps. That way they would know exactly where the State line was. After all AL Gore was from TN AND he invented the Internet. I'm pretty sure I've stumbled on to something here.
BrentM I'm going to put you on investigative duty we need to talk to some of the older deer and see if any of them ever heard of this.

I can tell you this much for sure....... the deer on the huntland/Elora side of the plateau sure don’t act like the deer on this side of the plateau in terms of when they rut or their fear of daylight. I think there are more big deer per capita killed on that side too.
