I personally know of 7 breeder pens in Northern Limestone and western Madison county. Statewide will be 1000 or more easily.

Just do a Google search for "Bama Breeder Bucks" and see what comes up.

There is not 1000 licensed breeders, a little north of 200. High fences, not sure anyone knows exactly. They do not require a permit.

His question was:

How many Pay hunt, high fence, and breeders state wife. I took that as three different types of operations. That’s where I came up with 1000+/- places.

If he OP meant just fenced places I’d guess 500 or so including private places.

I meant how many high fence pay hunts that use deer bred in a pen/ breeding facility and how many breeding facilities. Looking for two numbers.

Not interested in high fence that has inclosed native deer and not added deer from a breeding facility.

I may be stupid but I don't get it. Pay money to kill tamed deer. Why not pay a farmer to shoot one of his cows. Be cheaper and taste a lot better

Am I the only one who read the article?
There's 204 licensed game preserves.
There might be a lot more, but the legal ones are 204.

My opinions and comments are my own. They do not reflect the position or political opinions of Aldeer or any of the Aldeer administration.

Older article. Not THAT old but I think he wants more up to date info. He's headed somewhere with this and he will have a good point. Gonna be interesting.

I only know of 1 in my county.

I think the 204 figure includes folks that host bird hunts for released birds, and probably doesn't have a fence. NightHunter, is that correct?

If I am right about that, then his statement that there are more than 200 deer breeders indicates the number has grown considerably since the article was written.

There will come a time that hunting deer in their native habitat will be an anomaly. The trend seems to be to grow and harvest, not hunt.

Really wasn't headed anywhere , but what I'm seeing here raises some more questions for me.

Which one?

OK, do the breeding facilities require a permit? Are they monitored ?

Are the high fence hunts that use those deer permitted? Are they monitored?

A different subject but related: Most states in the south no longer have a purely native whitetail population and the breeding farms now import genetically engineered whitetails to add to the mix. In Texas, you hear hunters talk about a good "native Texas buck" vs imported genetics. We are all hunting manipulated whitetail genetics whether we like to admit it or not. I don't care either way but thought these two articles were interesting reading. I think the guy that argues the imported deer genetics are gone is incorrect. The only thing that makes sense about why deer on one side of Lake Eufaula rut two months earlier than the other side is imported deer.

There are just north of 200 licensed game (deer) breeders.

Not sure how many folks receive deer to hunt in their enclosures but there are transfer documents that must be turned into the department. Any deer movement must be reported. If there is not a breeding facility on site then there is no breeder permit/license required.

Breeding facilities are monitored annually.

I believe that is a similar protocol to most states where the breeders fall under Wildlife Agency purview. In states where breeders fall under Dept. of Ag purview there is little oversight and less enforcement. Most Ag departments don't have an enforcement arm so there is little they can do.
