Just wondering how many of you practice from an elevated platform or treestand. Ive been shootin for about 3 months now on the ground, started shootin from a treestand yesterday. Shot fairly well, most of my shots were a few inches high.

I don't practice out of a tree much at all. But, that is one thing about shooting a lot of 3D. Many ranges have lots of good hills on them. You get lots of practice shooting down and up hill. Both are great practice.

I have killed just as many animals from the ground as I have out of trees. I killed my elk in CO years ago almost shooting straight up. He came side canyon on me and I had to shoot him in the bottom of the chest and the arrow stuck in the top of his shoulder on the off side. I had never practiced that shot in my life. I do now.

You just never know.

i have two treestands in the backyard i shoot out of occasionly....I have actually took my bow in when i hung stands in the off season and shot from diferent stands to see how my shots would be. I primaraly shoot from the ground, but it never hurts to shoot from a stand...

Remember that your shooting distance should not reflect how high you are. If you are shooting a target 30 yards away and you are 20 feet or 100 feet high your aim point will be the same, 30 yard pin. Range your targets from the bottom of the tree you are climbing and use that distance. Up high you will perceive targets farther than they actually are and shoot high.

I set up a 16' stand about 2 weeks ago, and I have been shooting from that.

i think more then anything shooting from an stand will just give you a lil more realistic look at what your shots will be like.....

Remember this simple rule, "Down Low, Up High".

If you're shooting down on the target, aim low and if you're shooting uphill, aim high.

Or you could get a pendelum and aim dead on ... forget about all the complex geometry and physics.

With proper form, you aim low whether it's uphill or downhill.

I shoot off my porch which is about 10-12 ft up. Even higher on one side. I also practice out of my treestands also.

I don't have a problem with my arrows being off much between the ground and elevated. 30 yd shot out of my climber 30 ft up is only different by and inch or two from the ground. They both hit the 4 inch black circle on my target.

The same principles apply for uphill as downhill. Distance should be measured in a straight horizontal line, vertical distance means nothing. Thus you will tend to shoot high uphill and downhill as bowtech dan said.

Man, I don't know where you get that one. The down low one is correct, your advice on shooting up hill will cause you to miss lots of game.

I certainly can't argue with Barry, he probably shoots more arrows in an average week than I do in an average year.

Course, that's one of the reasons I switched to a pendelum. It's one less thing my feeble brain has to "cipher".

I watched a guy on the OC one night shooting at a big horn Ram in Arizona. He ranged the Ram at 110 yards but it was dang near straight up. He shot the Ram right threw the boiler room. Later he explained that he shot him for 60 yards! I was shocked! He went on to explain the math and it started making sense.

I hope to find enough money to buy one of these new angle compensation range finders. I bet it will really surprise me!

I've got one Barry. I haven't been able to try it out around any mountains though. The most I've had it compensate from a treestand has been 3 yards. I'll bring it with me to Autauga Saturday. Not sure if I'll get to shoot the known distance part or not. If I do, it'll come in handy on some of those hills down there. wink
