Seen it a couple of times.

Do you know of any reason why they would place it there?
We sure can't figure out why they would have; our only thought was perhaps it was to make it closer to the showers/sinks.

I am working in Austin Texas right now and the water heaters and A/C units are in the attic. Crazy. Too many potential water problems with that.

Try explaining to a woman how temperature affects air volume in a closed contained like a tire. My wife thinks when it gets cold the air leaks from her tire making the pressure low. She never studied the ideal gas law in school.

A 60 watt bulb, burning for 24 hours, will cost an average of 12 to 15 cents.

X 20 bulbs X 365 days a year

Would buy a nice new rifle!

I've been swapping out my light bulbs to LED. Less energy and they last a looong time.

LED bulbs suck. I gave them a try and they suck. Takes too long to come on, they don't last 73 years like they claim, the lighting is weird and they're f'king expensive. Just another liberal greenie load of manure.

I live in North AL and they built the whole dang subdivision with the water heaters in the attic. 4 years ago when it got this cold, insurance had a party in our neighborhood.

The only reason I can think they put it in the attic is to save the space in the house or garage?

We had it moved to the garage while our ceiling and walls were out.

There's some new construction in Auburn being built this way, I didn't realize it was a thing.

In a garage is the only place for water heaters...or a Rinnai in the wall.

Clem, I know you're probably certain of what they were, but are you sure the bulbs you tried weren't CFL's? Compact Fluorescent light bulbs? Those are the one that are slow, get brighter as they warm up and generally aren't worth a crap.

I love LED's. We are slowly replacing our lighting at the shop with them because they are so much brighter than our current high bay lights.

CFLs suck.
LEDs are great.
I love them.

If you have can lights with bulbs, you can switch for these in about 30 seconds a piece

https://www.superiorlighting.com/LED_Ret...ASABEgIlx_D_BwE

About $7 a piece at Lowes.

13 year expectancy. Less energy.

It’s way more common down here than not. The majority of houses I’ve owned it’s been in the attic.

Putting a water heater in the attic makes as much sense as stringing a water line through your trees.
I'd kick a builder in the nuts if he tried to my water in the attic.

same here. craziest space saving idea ever. I have had one ( in a former home) rust out and woke up to an inch of water in one side of my house. nightmare.

Anyone who has open bare pipes in a crawl space in this weather is an IDOT. If the lines ain't buried, it needs to be well insulated. Allowing a drip is ok if it affects the lines that T off to a stagnant non-flowing/non-insulated line. But what area is heated ain't gonna freeze. Insulate the bare open lines.

why would you leave the kitchen faucet dripping is it going to get below 32° inside your house? I can understand exterior silcocks if there not the newer frost proof kind but ive never understood leaving a faucet dripping in a warm house. Ive worked maintenance for over 10 years and never seen a burst pipe inside a heated home from freezing.
My God, you've been in maintenance for 10 years and you don't understand why keeping water flowing will prevent it from freezing? Ever seen a waterfall freeze? Granted, they will freeze if it's cold enough, but we don't get that around here.
I guess people that live up north have to run their faucets all winter then? your pipes aint gonna freeze inside the house if you got the heater going. Especially if you got a concrete slab. If you got a 100 year old house with a crawl space underneath you might need to keep it flowing but not in a modern home. Now an outside hose bibb is a different story but they make those frost proof now the valve sits about 6 inches inside the wall intead of right under the handle. Old habits just die hard

A friend of mine closed on a house last Friday (the 29th of December); he did have the heat running as freezing was an obvious concern and he hadn't moved in yet.
His wife went to show her mom the house on the 2nd and the whole thing was FLOODED.
The hot water heater had for some unknown reason been installed in the attic and the pipe had completely burst in two. Water pressure was strong enough that it had sprayed holes through the walls. Good thing he has insurance!!

Running the heat does NOT guarantee you won't have problems.
ive never seen hot water freeze before water heaters are notorious for bursting after about 10-15 years for no obvious reason other than lack of quality i replace them all the time. And id personally pay a months salary to kick whoever came up with the idea of putting a water heater in the attic in the nuts. Half the time they wont even fit out the attic access because it was installed before construction finished not to mention its not very fun toting a 200 lbs water heater while balancing on rafters. A 1st floor install is about a couole hours and one man job, attic 2 men and half a day or more

No they don't. Unless the temps are below zero for prolonged periods and/or have poor insulation.
