I keep telling them to leave the faucets dripping, and every time I go back in the kitchen they have it cut off? Do they want a full blown expensive sh1tstorm? why would you leave the kitchen faucet dripping is it going to get below 32° inside your house? I can understand exterior silcocks if there not the newer frost proof kind but ive never understood leaving a faucet dripping in a warm house. Ive worked maintenance for over 10 years and never seen a burst pipe inside a heated home from freezing. My God, you've been in maintenance for 10 years and you don't understand why keeping water flowing will prevent it from freezing? Ever seen a waterfall freeze? Granted, they will freeze if it's cold enough, but we don't get that around here. I guess people that live up north have to run their faucets all winter then? your pipes aint gonna freeze inside the house if you got the heater going. Especially if you got a concrete slab. If you got a 100 year old house with a crawl space underneath you might need to keep it flowing but not in a modern home. Now an outside hose bibb is a different story but they make those frost proof now the valve sits about 6 inches inside the wall intead of right under the handle. Old habits just die hard

Heck, my wife is the "YOU left this light on" police at my house. I only have to rarely get called in for back up, PLUS she's turned the faucets on the last 3 nights and opened the cabinet doors to get more warmth under the sink. Maybe she needs to start a consultation business. Some of us are worth our salt...just sayin. I am the one who has turned on the faucets in our house and the one who has opened the cabinets and the one who is constantly turning off lights and I could go on but you get the point.. We don't lump ALL men into the same pot so please consider NOT lumping us all in the same pot. Thank you. Maggie, you, Brads wife and my wife are the only 3 women in the great state of Alabama apparently, that know to shut doors, leave the water dripping, turn the lights off, and turn the dog house door to the south in this weather. My wife even LIKES the thermostat set at 61F in the winter and 75f in the summer. I'm a truly blessed man. As I was typing this, she told our daughter to turn off a light.

If our faucets had a light switch on them, they would run 24/7 My wife and kids think power is free. My wife is the last to leave the house in the mornings. When I get home for lunch most days their is 6-15 lights on, a couple of tv's, etc. It chaps my ass to no end. I mean, how damn lazy do you have to be to not flip a switch. I'd be damned if that chit would fly in my house. She'd be going back to her mothers. Thank God I got one of the few with common sense.

How many of y'all leave on at least one light at night in the den or hall or somewhere when you go to bed?
I've seen houses that are pitch black at night and wonder how loudly someone curses when they step on a Lego or jam their toe in a chair getting up at 2:43 a.m. to get a drink of water.

We don't leave any overhead lights on but have a few "nightlights" in the halls and bathrooms.
If I had it to build again, I would have put a light switch beside my bed for the living room lights. That way if I heard a bump in the night I could turn on the LR lights from the BR, which would startle the crap out of a burgler and give me the upper hand.

Like a cave at my house. No Lego's these days and there has been enough fuss made in the past that chairs get pushed in as the table is cleared. All that said, We do keep a mini fridge in the bedroom with a few bottles of water so I don't have to trample through the rest of the house in the middle of the night.

I understand not being wasteful, and I'm not defending those who leave lights on all. But, in reality it isn't going to break the bank. A 60 watt bulb, burning for 24 hours, will cost an average of 12 to 15 cents. X 20 bulbs X 365 days a year Would buy a nice new rifle!

His wife went to show her mom the house on the 2nd and the whole thing was FLOODED. The hot water heater had for some unknown reason been installed in the attic and the pipe had completely burst in two. Water pressure was strong enough that it had sprayed holes through the walls. Good thing he has insurance!! Running the heat does NOT guarantee you won't have problems.

Not a perfect solution but you could look into some wifi enabled switches for lamps.

Seen it a couple of times.
