When do y'all add sugar cakes for winter feeding? My bees here at the house have been pretty active over the past month. Do y'all ever open them up and check to see how much honey they have left? I have not done anything with them the last couple of winters but was wondering if I need to check on them during the next warm spell?

Don't give up, don't ever give up!

I should have added one to a hive at the shop about a month ago. I checked them this past week and they had starved to death. Next warm day we have, I'm putting "Mountain Camp" sugar on all my hives.

Added a super and 5-6 pounds of sugar (mountain camp) to each of my hives last week. Even with the warm days we have had the girls are not bringing anything in. Will check again next month during a day with temps above 55. Lots cheaper to feed a bit of sugar than to let a hive starve.

Yes it is, and I stupidly overlook a couple of hives every year.

When you dump the sugar in, mist if with water to get them started feeding on it. They'll carry out dry sugar and won't eat it. The moisture from the hive will melt the sugar over time and make it easier for them to consume.

Understand. Having only 7 hives makes it a much easier task.
