This past weekend I went down to Wilcox County to a friend and old fraternity brother's farm for a little pledge class reunion. It was a blast. It was great to see some guys I haven't seen in almost 20 years, catch up, and tell some stories. It was a hoot and may take me a minute to recover. rofl His farm is beautiful and loaded with wildlife and plenty of groceries for them. It was a little warm so there wasn't as much deer activity as we would like but I was lucky enough to take down my first hog ever. I got this nice little 110-120lb sow with my bow. I haven't really had that many opportunities at hogs since I've mainly hunted extreme Northeast Alabama my entire life.

Around 4pm a group of 5-6 came in. It was pretty thick in a little bottom where I was. She was the smallest (probably the best eating I figured) and gave me the best shot quartering away from me slightly at 40yds. I hit her right in front of her back leg and it exited right next to her front shoulder. I waited a little while before climbing down in the hopes I might see a deer. I called my buddy and got down just before dark so we could find her and get her out of there. I had good blood so I started tracking her. She was leaking pretty bad and I could see several spots where she had bedded down briefly. She would have died if I would have given her more time. By this time my buddy arrived and was walking towards me through the woods. Next thing I know this hog stands up on her front legs from behind a log about ten feet from, starts squealing and trying to come after me dragging her rear end. I finally finished her off with my FNX 45. They are tough little boogers and that was definitely a lesson for this north Alabama boy that you better watch out for a boar in that same situation.

Nothing more fun than shooting pigs with arrows. Congrats. JPW's land sure has a good population as does much of our area.

thumbup JPWs place was sweet too. I did get one sit in down there as well next to the creek. Both are beautiful places with some beautiful woods. Hog, deer, and turkey sign was everywhere. I would give my right arm for a piece of property like either one of them up here in N. Alabama. grin

I love to shoot them with bows too, but for just flat out fun. Give me a powerline full of hogs, AR, eotech, and a full 30 round mag. That's real fun.

It would have been fun for sure to have my AR with me. The irony is I was about to take it with me to the stand also but couldn't hit the broad side of a barn at 100 yards earlier that afternoon when I was making sure my scope was still on. It could have had something to do with all of that bourbon I drank the night before. I got back and another buddy was like "there ain't nothing wrong with that rifle" after he put five or six rounds in a three inch circle. slap

Good job; I hunt in Wilcox on the river and we are covered up with pigs; worse than normal.

I'm a couple miles off the river and I replanted 5 acres out of our 12 acres of greenfields this past Sunday before I left to come home. They were all green and lush 2 weeks ago and 5 of them looked like they had been freshly disked and hit with a tiller this past weekend. We've always had hogs but nothing like this year. Way worse than normal.

we've found that not planting any winter peas seems to help

Wheat, oats, rye and clover. No peas, beans, standing corn or turnips. I know better. I'm guessing that the bumper crop of white oaks dropping in these fields brought them in and while they were there, they did what hogs do and destroyed the place. I hunted Sunday morning and actually carried my AR in addition to my .300 just in case they came back. I'll kill them all if I get the chance.
