Best buddy shot a giant...not the best shot...anyone know of anyone with a dog that can come out tonight? Off Pike road in Montgomery

I'm not far from you but it'll be tomorrow morning before I come out. If it's a bad shot then you probably need to give it time anyways. Where did the arrow hit?....or is this a muzzleloader?

He's in a pickle and has to be back for dental school classes in the am...said he shot it, hit a lil back and high (deer ducked on him)...ran into a tree and snapped 12 in of arrow off. He said found blood and a piece of fat on the broke part...He's killed big bucks and said this joker was a beast...at least a 9

Do him a favor and go for him in the morning and find his deer. Let him go to school and worry about it till you send him some pictures.

I understand if he has things to do tomorrow but if it�s a bad shot then the deer still needs time to bed up and die. If I came out right now we�d likely track a few hundred yards and jump him. See if he can arrange for someone to meet me there in the morning.

Yeah I told him to back out so he hasn't pushed the deer...said he watched him run 100 yards through thick grass...I'll try to swing coming in the am early, lemme talk with him first..what type of shot does it sound like CNC?

It�s hard to say exactly what kind of shot we're dealing with if the arrow hit as the deer was wheeling around. I just tracked one like that a few days ago and the exit was way back in the guts nearly under his back leg. Back and high is not a great hit but if he got enough penetration to get down into his guts then he�ll bed up and eventually die.

Which end of the arrow was snapped off? Fletching end or broadhead (partial pass thru)? Is the deer still totting 16-18" of arrow inside of him? How high was he (shot angle)? Was the deer perfectly broadside, quartered to or quartered away? If he hit back and he was quartered away, he probably angled up into the good stuff. Broadside, back is back and generally where you hit. Quartered to and hitting back means it angles way back. Too many variables and not enough info to determine type of shot IMO.

This will be a fun follow.

You're exactly right....it's hard to say for sure. It�s one of the reasons I like to play things conservatively. Our best odds of retrieving a deer like this is giving him time. I�m guessing that the piece of fat he found on the broke piece of arrow is from the backstrap area�.meaning a really high entry hole.

Gobble4me.....Can you find out a few more details about the hit? Was the deer broadside or angled?

Or hopefully for the shooter, he got really good penetration and it is from the inner loin area and just pulled out on the splintered/fractured end of the arrow when he broke it off. If that's the case, deer will be dead in the morning and will be an easy find if he's not pushed tonight.

SOrry for the wait, in a meeting and logged in on the phone...buddy called back with news that his cousin called him a dog and got permission to track out on the neighboring property...I�m meeting the tracker at 6 am (hard for me to get away with med school but thankfully don�t have a test in am) I�ll find some more details on shot later tonight and will keep y�all updated...would definitely be using cnc if he hadn�t of already found someone

I'd waited on CNC for two reasons. One, he's got a helluva dog and can find deer and two, I want to see the story of the track! And for me, unless I had a test, I'd miss class til the afternoon. Just sayin'. Hope he finds the deer! Keep us posted1

Used to eat at that diner all the time during deer season years ago. That little town got hit hard when the economy took a dump. For a little while there,id heard it was pretty dangerous after dark. Heard some crazy stories from the owner of that grocery store there. He used to process deer at one time,and did a pretty decent job of it. That guy with the raspy voice still run that diner? He was always real nice to me and my Pa.

Hey don't blame me...I did all I can do to try and get CNC out there, but it's his deer, his land, and his call...Absolutely, bamaeyedoc I'm skipping all my classes in the am to help him! lol shot was broadside and found the back of the arrow piece as well as a clean piece of fat with blood smeared around the tree it ran into. He said the deer ran off and kept bouncing its back end up like a fawn would do through the thick grass and said the blood wasn't definitive of the type of hit. Also, he mentioned he didn't hit it above the spine, just high and back so I'm thinking guts...also, it's not IdahoMike doing the track

Hopefully it's a "real tracking dog" and not just a dog. My black lab is a jam up bird dog with a good nose and I've taken her to recover deer before on good blood trails just to see how she'd do. She can find them ok on easy 50-100 yd tracks but I wouldn't trust her on a big buck. There's a big diff in a real, well trained, tracking dog and simply a dog that will follow an easy track. I hope y'all recover him.

Yep, you need a deer tracking dog with some experience...not just some guys DOG.

Yeah...guys chargin 100$ fee for comin out there and apparently he is the real deal...the dog can bay as well...Before I joined this sight, I never would have thought about calling a tracking dog, but I appreciate everyone's input over the years and have learned a bunch about it all...I honestly give CNC a lot of that credit with a lot of that...I'll let yall know in the am how it goes boys!

Only went 120 yards, laid down and died. Last night he would�ve ran 4 miles and the tracker would�ve given up. Glad he did the right thing!

If more folks would do what they just did�� then recovering deer like this one would be a breeze and we�d all be a lot happier. Wounded deer want to bed up quickly. If left alone they usually won�t go more than a few hundred yards. However, the vast majority of deer we have to track have been pushed from the original bed due to the hunter wanting to go after it right then. Recognize when you�ve made a bad shot and back out. This is an awesome example.

Well thats great! But the best part is you did wait. We have seen so many others on here not and lose the deer.

Here's a pic of the hit. Fat must have come from the hind quarter. I bet it hit the deer as he was wheeling to leave. It's amazing how much that can change the point of impact.

Before this thread dwindles I wanted to point out one more thing about this story since its very common amongst our tracking calls. Look at how much difference there was in where the hunter originally reported thinking he hit the deer compared to the actual hit location. The original report from the hunter was that he hit it �a lil� back and high���Now that we see where it was actually hit��a more accurate description would be �WAAAY back! I damn near shot it in the arse!����.

It�s all good though. It�s just part of it when things happen quickly and you�re put under intense stress or excitement. Sometimes we perceive things a little different than how they actually unfolded. I think police officers go through something similar to this it seems like. Always err on the side of caution if there�s any doubt at all. The most common thing I hear folks say when I arrive is�.�Man. I just thought he would be laying right there dead.��..I�d say at least half the folks believe they hit him just behind the shoulder. Our mind is just seeing what it wants to in this situation.

For the record I knew I hit him that far back, the wording just got mixed in translation. Still a good point though CNC. I'll give y'all the story from my end if anyone is still interested.

Set up a new green field bordering the Montgomery water works property; about 600 acres of open field grown up for the past 6-7 yrs. Nobody hunts the water works and there isn't much going on over there so it is a haven for deer. I'd been getting pics of 6-7 deer per afternoon on this 1/4 acre field so I wanted to set up there. Wind was swirling bad about 3:30 and I got so mad at the weather man that I grabbed my bow to climb down to another spot. As I stood up I saw a doe walking through the thick stuff on the other property so I decided I just needed to stick it out and risk getting winded, I figured if a doe stepped out I could probably take a shot before she smelled me. About 3:45 the wind corrected and I was feeling pretty good, but 4 rolled around and it got swirly again. I had some raw cotton I was peeling off and letting go to watch the wind and as I dropped the last piece and watched it fly towards the field I look past it and see this huge buck at 60 yards dead downwind of me. Somehow he didn't smell me but he was coming straight to me so I couldn't move, at 45 he turned and was about to walk out of my shooting lane so I grabbed my bow and drew really quick and he stared me down when I did that. Not knowing when he was going to bolt I rushed the shot and saw it smack him high in the guts. He turned and ran straight into this 600 acre thicket, breaking off the arrow on a tree as he went in. I walked down there and found the arrow broken off 13-14 inches back which made me feel good cause I knew he had my rage in him still but I took one look at that thicket and knew no mortal man could track a deer through it, dark brown shrubs and grass head high with what I knew was going to be a very light blood trail. Thats when I called my best buddy Gobble4me757 cause I knew he was on aldeer a lot and maybe could find me some help. Anyway, the guy I ended up calling basically said the same thing that all you guys were saying, best to let him sit up over night, and I knew it was the right thing. Since I couldn't track this deer 1 foot into this thicket it was easier to let him go for a while. When they found him the next morning they said he was stiff but still warm to the touch, he would have been a memory if anyone had tried to go after him that night. Still haven't seen the deer yet haha.
