I have always shot Remington Core-Lokt in my 243. Last two seasons I used the Winchester Deer Season XP and was not really satisfied with it so was going to swap back to the Remington this year. Could not find any no where so I picked up the Federal Fusion. Went shooting yesterday and it shot great. Got home and unloading everything and noticed they were moly coated. What exactly is moly coating? Will affect my barrel any? Also got to thinking will it poison the meat of a deer?

Moly is a very black, very slick compound. By impregnating a copper jacketed bullet with a moly coating, it will lubricate the bullet and reduce the friction as the bullet goes down the bore at high velocity, thereby reducing copper build-up in the bore.

Molybdenum is a dry lubricant that reduces friction in the barrel. I've shot it before and didn't have any issues. Supposedly it decreases the amount of copper buildup therefore less barrel cleaning. That's all I know about it.

You do realize that you nave been shooting deer with lead bullets right? No need to worry bout the molly coating anymore than you would worry about getting lead poisoning.

Once you develop a layer of moly, 10-20 shots?? Camber pressure is slightly reduced and allows a little more powder. It was the new big thing 20-30yrs ago, some swear by it, others view it as a waste of time.

Moly is used, or has been used, as a EPS bead lubricant for years. If you drink from a styrofoam cup, you've been exposed to moly.

Just an fyi if you change back to regular lead without cleaning your barrel good, you may notice accuracy to be down. This is due to the coating as mentioned above. Just clean it and it will be fine.

Only accurate rifles are interesting.

Cleaning moly fouling out of a barrel is a MAJOR chore. You need JB paste and Kroil and a lot of elbow grease. My advice - don't use moly coated bullets.
