Lack of interest= lack of success.I never hear soccer being discussed anywhere unless it's a child's rec team. MLS teams are averaging anywhere from 20-40k fans/game. Atlanta United is bringing in close to/in excess of 70k/game. There is FAR from a "lack of interest", even in the South. US tv viewership of the English Premier League is also growing at a rapid pace. I won't go so far as to say soccer is "taking over", but interest in the US is growing pretty rapidly.

I hear you Gomer! I did not see the game but was appalled at the outcome. No way Trinidad should have won that game. I don't know what time the other two games started, but I feel like there could have been some collusion after the US result, to keep the gringos out of the WC.
Most of the folks around here don't like soccer because they don't understand the way the game is played. And there are way more than a few thousand that like and follow the game here in Alabama.
Go City! The games were pretty much simultaneous. There were some BS goals in both of the other games, but doesn't matter...we screwed ourselves and did not deserve to tie, much less win. As far as why it's not more popular here, I have a theory. With soccer, you have to watch 45-50 minutes at a time with no "breaks". Football, you get about 10 seconds of action with several seconds of downtime in between, then you get a commercial break and/or a timeout every several minutes. Same with basketball. With baseball, you get breaks between every half-inning. Breaks where you can get up to go take a whiz, get a drink/snack, play on your phone, whatever. With soccer, the game goes non-stop for each each half. I honestly believe most Americans just don't have the attention span for it...it's just not the way we're conditioned.

Never been to an MLS game. I did go see two Premier League teams play in Nashville last summer. Very few of the 50,000+ at the game appeared to be Hispanic, most were White Americans.

We're in the middle of college football season, the MLB playoffs and, granted it isn't as popular as it once was, it is Talladega week, yet we have a thread on fútbol?!
The sports forum is going straight to hell.

Oh no. I'm all for a knockdown drag out SEC match up that ends 17-14. That's still 1000x more scoring than a 2-1 match.

They run around a lot, kick the ball to each other, and attempt to eventually kick the ball into the other team's goal. Yep...got it.

I really enjoy watching the US men’s team. It’s a shame that we didn’t qualify for the World Cup. If our top athletes played soccer the US would be elite. But they play football , basketball and baseball. Lot of truth to this, and soccer is gaining in popularity in areas where you see multi-sport athletes with a background in soccer. My favorite is Dalvin Tomlinson, but that dude is a true renaissance man (3x state champion wrestler, artist, NFL D-lineman, soccer player, chess player.) But the best example is Odell Beckham. He's obviously a talented athlete, and he admitted his favorite sport as a kid was soccer. He realized there was no future for him in soccer, so he stuck with football. Until the NFL implodes, it will win out for the next generation or so. But to be honest, I'm disappointed in all of you... Women's volleyball is the sport of today, tomorrow and tonight.

While the men’s team not making the WC is crappy (I mean who doesn’t want to see the US kick ass at whatever international sport it is), I’m hopeful the US Rugby 7’s team will get a little more attention now. We have some really good athletes that play for our country that kind of go unnoticed. The 7’s tourney in LA in November should be a good one to watch. Check out the highlights on Perry Baker who plays for the US Eagles. Dude is insanely fast. No doubt....a lot of folks, especially in the south, will never like soccer (or at least won't admit to it). I know we joke about it being a "commie sport" and stuff, but I think some truly do believe it. But if some of these soccer haters would give rugby a chance, I bet they'd love it. It's basically a team full of linebackers playing "smear the queer" (or whatever you called that school yard game where it was every man for himself) with no pads. It can be a little difficult to learn the rules, but even if you don't know what's going on, it's a blast to watch.

gomer, i'll treat your thread seriously: it is no surprise to me that bruce arena turned out to be - surprise! - bruce arena, who couldn't even get his team to play one serious game. and these yokels here dogging a sport where the average player runs seven miles a game, and does things with a ball with his feet that they can't do with their hands are just showing their mass ignorance. soccer here has sports competition that simply does not exist elsewhere in the world. and that is how a piss ant tiny team like trinidad and tobago can play just well enough to beat a team from a country of 330 million that has one - one - non-goalie world class player, a 19-year-old who is 5-6 years from his prime. this. situtation. is. embarrassing. this country does not have reliable, talented coaching at the youth level, or even the academy level. there are millions of kids who don't have the bodies for american football or nba basketball who could be playing this game and excelling if the quality coaching - and opportunities - were there ...
