Running back is carrying the ball on a sweep. The cornerback comes up to tackle. They both lower their head and it is a good collision. RB goes down for about a 3 yard gain. Pretty routine play but a flag comes in. The ref who appeared to have been calling his first game ever calls the cornerback for targeting for a helmet to helmet collision. The sad part is we had just taken the lead back and that 15 yards kept a drive alive for them and put them first and goal.
It was a good thing I was in the press box keeping the clock or I would have come unglued. Our coach went on the field and had a few things to say. I shook his hand after the game and told him that he kept his cool better than I. There is no doubt they would have had to toss me.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

I'm cool. I talked with the coach and bemoaned how hard it was to try to tell the kids to keep their heads up after fighting so hard to lose it on crap. A tough life lesson for them that will make them better men is the only way to look at it.

Actually, the worst call ever may have been in a AU/Vandy game when they gave a Vandy receiver a touchdown on a pass that hit him in the belly and he immediately dropped. I guess the ref assumed he was going to catch it and quit looking at the result. I'll see if I can find it on Youtube.
Upon further review, it wasn't in his belly, but in his hands. Remember, this was before plays could be reviewed, so it stood as a touchdown.

For you officials, when I called back in the dark ages, there was no call for targeting or helmet to helmet in HS, if it has been added since then, how can a running back be the victim of targeting when he's running and lowers his head? You see this every college and pro game between back and linebackers all the time. My understanding is that a ball carrier cannot be targeted because he is not a defenseless player. For you officials, is that even a high school rule now or did this doofus think he needed to call an NFL call so he can get the call to the bigs?

The officials called targeting on the South Florida quarterback (Flowers) Thursday night because of lowering his head and hitting his would be tackler. The officials need to get a grip on what they're doing on the field.
I came, I saw, so I killed them all......Vern

The targeting calls have gotten ridiculous. Players WITH the ball lowering their heads into the tackler's helmets and the tacklers are being flagged, ejected and suspended for the first half of the next game.

Sounds like targeting to me, bad form if nothing else
Targeting is on a defenseless player. A running back carrying the ball is not defenseless. He is as responsible for the helmets hitting as the defender.

Wrong targeting is not always on a defenseless player. It's been a high school rule for 4 years or more
