Heads up, if any of you have kids that play baseball in a Dizzy Dean league, you're gonna have to buy new bats before spring ball. Effective Jan 1, 2018, ALL bats must bear the new USABat stamp on it to be legal for play. These bats were not even available to the retail market until 9/1/17, so any bat you had last year won't be legal, and you won't be able to "pull a Gomer" and find a good used Craigslist deal....Reckon I know what GomerJr is getting for Christmas. I'm convinced this is nothing more than bat company lobbyists paying off leagues to change their rules to boost sales. http://alabamadizzydean.com/PDF/ybbcor_bat_standards_2018.pdf

I might see it making a difference (from a safety perspective) once they're up to 12 or 13yrs old or so............but you'll never convince me it'll make a difference for 5/6yr olds. The ones that can hit will smack the ball even if you give them a 2x4 to use as a bat. and the ones that can't hit, still wouldn't hit even if you gave them a rolled/loaded bat.

Wood bats are baseball. Aluminum is for cans and airplanes

I talked to several dizzy dean directors at the world series this summer and they said it was all due to player safety. The head guy explained it to me that in these rec orgs you have a lot of kids that can't catch and aren't quick enough to get out of the way of a hard hit ball and can get seriously injured if they took a direct hit. I completely agree with him, my little 6 year old team had some kids that could absolutely stroke it and we played some teams where no one on the infield could catch a weak grounder much less a hard hit one. We used CAT 7s and its ridiculous how much the ball jumped off that bat. I would be perfectly fine if they made baseball all wood bats starting in tee ball, that's what we practice with anyway.
We are not perfect, only forgiven!!!

When I coached an 8 year old kid pitch team we pitched from 35 feet. I had a kid hit a line drive back to the pitcher and hit him dead center of his hat bill. If the ball would have been an inch lower there is no doubt in my mind the kid would be dead or seriously injured. This was done with a Catalyst composite big barreled bat the kid hit the ground like a sack of potatoes and I thought he was dead, the ball was hit so hard I didn't even see it come off the bat. He had a knot on his forehead where the bill impacted his head but he got back up and finished the game. I did get the pitching distance moved to 40 feet after that but it was a scary incident. pitchers at that age definitely need a facemask and a heart guard

Couple things. All must remember that Louisville and Easton are two major sponsors of youth baseball.
Combat (relative unknown, new to the market) came out with a bat (the B1) that took over about 85% of the little league market in about 12 months. All of a sudden, a new bat reg was introduced, the BPF1.15 which made the Combat bats illegal. Easton and LS were immediately ready to go with bats meeting the new reg. Combat, who had spent all the money and time to develop the best bat under the previous requirements, was left in the dust while the big boys got their market share back.
High level HS and College kids crushing the ball all over the park with hot bats, MLB cant really get a true read on the players from a historical (3-4 yr) hitting perspective so all of a sudden, the BBCOR bat reg is instituted to cool the bats down to mimic wood bat performance. Now MLB gets a better read on college players. The bats got so bad under the initial BBCOR reg that virtually nobody could hit a homer anymore so they went to a hotter baseball. Homeruns came back and ball exit speeds increased back up. If it was truly about player safety, why wasnt everything kept the same at what was initially determined to be the "safe level of performance"?
Wood is not practical for LL, middle school or even HS for that matter. A good mid level wood bat is around $100. Once the kids are over about 10 or 11 yrs old they are throwing hard enough and swinging hard enough to start breaking them on a regular basis on off center hits etc. With the smaller sized fields, flying bat heads and handle shards actually do present a significant danger in addition to the cost of 2-3 busted bats per game.
At the end of the day, it is always under the disguise of "player safety" but it is really about the $$$. The bat manufacturers wholeheartedly back every single regulation change and say, "its about player safety" because they know that every time a new reg is instituted, every bat previously sold is now illegal and everyone has to buy new, from them, yet again. It happens about every 5-7 years. "In the interest of player safety of course".

hey I agree there is no doubt it, its about the $$$ with the player safety thrown in there for window dressing. Those CAT 7s were stupid hot and I could easily see where a kid 40 feet away could get seriously hurt. I still have a knot on my shin where a 90lb kid sent one up the middle back in late July, I had 0 time to move. Not all orgs are moving to this new rule, I believe some of the travel ball orgs are going with the old 1.15 rule, not 100% sure on that but just what I've been told.
no doubt about it though there are gonna be a whole lot less dingers this coming spring/summer.

USSSA is due for a new stamp so they will probably move to the new USA specs but you will have to have the USSSA stamp on the bat.

The bat change is strictly for the bat company's profit the change is going from 1.15 to 1.10 how much difference is that going to make??? Eli is making the switch this fall to the bbcor-3 bats it really shows which kids can truly hit and which kids struggle. I saw a 12 year this summer at a tournament hit three homeruns all over 300 feet and one of them was 350. That kid was a insane hitter and does it consistently from what I was told.

I played baseball from before little league age through a year after high school of travel ball in 82. Always with wooden bats. I cracked one in practice and never saw one break into two or more pieces. If you can't read the label when held in front of you rotate bat till you can. Wood bats don't shatter easily if handled properly. Aluminum bats are a crutch that make the sweet spot too big. That sting in your hands from not watching the ball hit the bat is a great teaching aid. I still hear my dad from the dugout when I was standing on first rubbing my hands, "Eye on the ball son!"

Absolutely. These bat manufactures aren't going to make dead bats. My 5yr old son practices MOSTLY with wood, so when he picks up the aluminum he understand how to get the barrel to the baseball and in return "FINDING the SWEET SPOT" to hit it hard. As a Dad I will still go out to try and find the HOTTEST bat for my kids. I was lucky enough to play professionally for a few years and don't be fooled by wood bats. Smart player parents are going to research and find the best wood bats for their kids. Go pick up a wood bat with 4-8 grains in it, for that matter find one with 10 or fewer and watch how a baseball explodes off it. A friend of mine that played with me was given 4 of A-Rods bats, they had 4 grains in it each, the ball EXPLODED off that thing, I was SHOCKED watching a 175lb kid hit 400ft bombs with it. As a pitcher we got pitchers BP HR Derby, I was all of 6' 175lbs, I would go into our bat bin and find the fewest grained bat I could find and I'd win it just about every time with 8-10+ HRs, now I had an advantage because I was a duel player in college but still, wood bats have ridiculous pop. So don't be fooled by a wood bat there is always a advantage, you just have to know the advantage.

One thing I haven't seen y'all mention yet though is this is only for Rec Leagues. This rule doesn't apply to Travel Ball leagues. At least that's what I'm told. My kids are out of the baseball scene now but I have several friends that coach travel all and one friend who is a league director. They all tell me it will only apply to the park leagues. In my opinion though, yes, this is strictly to sell more bats. New regulations come out every few years.

GomerJr plays at Kentuck in Northport (Warrior Baseball). They are an affiliate of Dizzy Dean. So any league or tournament affiliated with Dizzy Dean will be affected. I don't know if other groups like Little League, Cal Ripken, Dixie Youth, etc are adopting the new USABat regs or not.
