It may be a dumb question but I couldn't find an answer on line. Is it legal to hunt over bait (corn or whatever) for hogs?
If voting made any difference, they wouldn’t let us do it.-Mark Twain

Hogwild is correct, you can only get a permit outside of turkey and deer season.
If you can get a permit, baiting them is a great way to pattern and hunt them.
If you get one and need some advice getting set up, give me a call, I will be glad to help! LOL

Is this not a stupid law? You can bait them in a trap and shoot them in a trap, but you can't just put out the corn, or feeder, and shoot them there. Why not allow the hunting of hogs over bait, without a permit, outside of deer and turkey seasons? Any reason not to request this law be changed? I got a permit for it myself, but the standard permit also gives me the right to shoot deer and hogs at night. That was more than I needed and a waste of the game warden's time in having to do the paperwork anyway.

It has been interesting to me to attend the CAB meetings and hear the many speakers talk about hog problems. And I continue to hear that hunting won't have an impact on the population explosion. Yet, nothing really seems to be getting done. I do know that doing nothing will not stop the hogs.

Those jokers are tearing us up. My best green field is now at least 50% destroyed. Where can I buy some portable traps? I guess if I was to bait the trap with corn, I don't want to be anywhere near it while deer hunting.

Moose,
If you have a buddy that can weld, I can help you build one.

I have some designs for one you can build yourself on my website at www.wilcoxwebworks.com/hs Look for the hog trapping page. Has a guillotine door made of wood that works well. Open top so deer can jump out. We have had a lot of trouble catching more deer than hogs in our totally enclosed traps. There is a guy in Camden that sells some very good doors too if you are interested in purchasing one. Call Park Harris at 334-682-4410

Thanks for the info. I had already been eyeing the plans on your website. :-)

So ...
You can legally use bait (hafta get a permit?) in a trap and then kill an animal inside that pen?
But without the trap, you can't use bait and shoot the hogs eating it?

That's a good design, Swamphunter, but I would replace that trap door with a spring-loaded root door. You can catch multiple hogs with a spring-loaded door.
My opinions and comments are my own. They do not reflect the position or political opinions of Aldeer or any of the Aldeer administration.
