I'm not a wather man, but I do pay very careful almost neurotic attention to these storms. All I heard about from the time I was a baby was how bad Camille was (my grandparents rode it out in a john-boat in Gulfport as there house came down around them). Then we went through Frederick and I was there as a little kid. And then all the storms after that, Opal, Ivan, Katrina, etc... So I pay careful attention to them. I was 10 years old and lived in Biloxi when Camille hit. My dad took pics of pine needles that were driven into power poles. We lived about 10 blocks off of the beach. I remember walking down to where that Huge Ocean freighter was washed across Highway 90. When the water receded, they had to dismantal the freighter to remove it. Another smaller boat was washed across Highway 90 and they ended up pouring a footing around it and made a restaurant. It was an interesting time to say the least.

New NHC update:
120 mph sustained winds, Category 3 storm
Movement to the north at 12 mph, so it's speeding up. With pressures rising, signifying a weakening storm. Yep...it's moving onto land more with each passing minute. Looks like Naples will get a direct hit here in the next couple of hours or so.

We will get some timber damage, mostly Georgia with this storm. This however, for us anyway, will not be like Ivan or Opal. I dont know if you recall or not, but Opal ruined the pole timber market for L.A. cause of the storm scars it put on all of the trees. Lordy, I hope not. I had around 100 mph winds during opal, the tree damage was awful and I was without power for close to a week. I'm way too old for that crap now

Its amazing these reporters are standing outside to bring these reports. If you have to wear a flak jacket and helmet to stand out in it, your a DA....

Coming off of Key West, now, moving almost due north, about a mile or two east of the forecast trackline.
A MILE OR TWO? GOSH, IF THOSE FORECASTERS ONLY COULD HAVE DONE BETTER! Right?...I've been thinking for a couple days, now, that the forecast was about as close to right as it could be, given the wobbling and not-quite-straight path a hurricane takes. Some big tweaks several days out, but like Skinny said, when it gets into a day or two or three out, it tightens up a whole lot. Yea they have been pretty close within 24hrs or so. But once they get out past 3 days they are so bad I don't know why they even try.

Looks like landfall has occurred just about at Naples. The system should start to weaken unless something pulls it back left over warm water.
Yep. 115 mph winds now, still moving straight north. Speeding up, too...up to 15 mph forward speed.

Its trying to wiggle left but the land may have it now. In about an hour or so we know for sure if its going to be inland and start dissipating or if its going to get back over water and recharge.

BTW, that landfall location is just about what the NHC called for about 5-6 days ago.

The embedded tornadoes with this storm are epic. Seems like every county north of Tampa has some-kind of tornado warning.
