It may be a dumb question but I couldn't find an answer on line. Is it legal to hunt over bait (corn or whatever) for hogs?

My understanding is that the only thing you can hunt over is plain salt. You can't even use salt in the NF or WMAs.

go to outdoorsalabama.com and read the regs.

No, you cannot hunt hogs over bait.

UNLESS, you have a permit from the local GW......and they will ONLY write them during the times when there is NO other hunting season in.

Hogwild is correct, you can only get a permit outside of turkey and deer season.

If you can get a permit, baiting them is a great way to pattern and hunt them.

If you get one and need some advice getting set up, give me a call, I will be glad to help! LOL

Is this not a stupid law? You can bait them in a trap and shoot them in a trap, but you can't just put out the corn, or feeder, and shoot them there. Why not allow the hunting of hogs over bait, without a permit, outside of deer and turkey seasons? Any reason not to request this law be changed? I got a permit for it myself, but the standard permit also gives me the right to shoot deer and hogs at night. That was more than I needed and a waste of the game warden's time in having to do the paperwork anyway.

ABSOLUTELY!!!

Technically, by the Regulations in place now......if I get invited to a property to catch hogs that are eating up expensive deer feed and turn my dogs loose in the 'area' of the feed......I am hunting with the aid of bait and breaking the Law.

How stupid is that????

Hogwild, it makes no sense at all. I am going to work on this through the advisory board and see what we can get in motion to change this. I know two of the guys and I'll see what we can do.

It has been interesting to me to attend the CAB meetings and hear the many speakers talk about hog problems. And I continue to hear that hunting won't have an impact on the population explosion. Yet, nothing really seems to be getting done. I do know that doing nothing will not stop the hogs.

Dead hogs to not reproduce.

Those jokers are tearing us up. My best green field is now at least 50% destroyed. Where can I buy some portable traps? I guess if I was to bait the trap with corn, I don't want to be anywhere near it while deer hunting.

I have some designs for one you can build yourself on my website at www.wilcoxwebworks.com/hs Look for the hog trapping page. Has a guillotine door made of wood that works well. Open top so deer can jump out. We have had a lot of trouble catching more deer than hogs in our totally enclosed traps. There is a guy in Camden that sells some very good doors too if you are interested in purchasing one. Call Park Harris at 334-682-4410

So ...

You can legally use bait (hafta get a permit?) in a trap and then kill an animal inside that pen?

But without the trap, you can't use bait and shoot the hogs eating it?

Clem, I don't think you need a permit to trap hogs using bait, then shoot them. But you can't just bait and shoot them. Make no sense. This is something that needs to be changed, for sure. I've got an advisory board member looking into it but this is something that really should be changed by executive order in my opinion.

You can bait them to a trap(without a permit) even during other hunting seasons but you can not hunt in the area that the baited trap is located.

You are right!

My Father-in-Law got a ticket in Monroe County several years ago for that.

He was invited to hunt a place with some friends and they put him in a nice food plot on Flat Creek. Right before dark, the GW pulled into the patch in his truck, got out and walked up to the house and got him down. There was a baited hog trap in the woods just off the field.....got 3 of them that afternoon and the tickets stuck......

That's a good design, Swamphunter, but I would replace that trap door with a spring-loaded root door. You can catch multiple hogs with a spring-loaded door.

My opinions and comments are my own. They do not reflect the position or political opinions of Aldeer or any of the Aldeer administration.

Either spring loaded or gravity will get um by the multiples. However I caught 7 at one time with a guillotine door like Williams.
