I have two swarms I got mid summer. Both hives have brood. Both are one deep box. One has 7 frames built out with brood/pollen/honey and the other has 4 frames built out. The guys on Beesource said to leave them separate to make it thru the winter with feeding, if necessary. I was wondering if I should combine them to at least make sure one hive makes it thru the winter. I have good access to goldenrod so I should have some fall stores on the way. I could always move the smaller hive to a Nuc box for the winter if needed.

Anybody dealt with something like this in the past?

I'd move that one with 4 frames built out to a nuc box. I think they'll do better trying to overwinter in a nuc box than a brood box.

I have yet to combine a hive in the fall. If both queens are laying good patterns, I'd leave them alone and feed them. Like Dustin said, move the 4 frames to a nuc. Having 4 frames built out is probably not enough. If you can't find at least one more frame of drawn comb, I'd feed them and see if you can't get them to draw some now.

You can put sugar bricks on top during the winter for feed. Will just need a shim to put the brick in. I'm making shims from 1x4's just butt jointed together.

I'm with Dustin and Fur. I would keep sugar water on the one with four frames. Let them draw out as much as possible.
I would wait until it cools down before I put the small one in a nuc. If we have a wet fall and good goldenrod they may build up good for you.
If you have other hives that are full you might take frame from one of them. But only if they have a full super for the winter.

Thanks y'all. Consensus answer to an Aldeer question. The moderator needs to note this one.

I'm in Houston so I hope the bees are good. Hope to be back in time to change out the mite treatments.
