Here is my try at it. This is the buck I mentioned in a previous post from last year.

2dogs care to explain why you wouldn't hinge cut?

I've got lots of hardwoods, but only a smattering of thicket-type areas.

I was figuring on improving the size of the thickets.

I'm not a timber expert but will take a stab. I think he’s mainly talking about in areas where there is ample cover. In Jackson county our woods are thick on the ground and thick up high with old hardwoods. Basically, I think it would be a waste of time and money to hinge cut in an area like that since the deer have plenty of cover.

Yep, it has to do more with topography than timber type. There's no loss for cover up here. I guess if you had a small acreage with all mature hardwoods and were dead set against cutting, some hinge cutting might be in order. I don't know anyone who has done hinge cutting up here. Many properties up here have too much cover, no need to make more.

hinge cutting will provide more food as well as cover.

Agree, however , if you have a hardwood clear cut, other mature hardwoods dropping acorns and some row crops near by a few hinged trees would be like a drop in the ocean. Waste of time and sweat in many areas up here. Hinging is great for those wide open timbered wood lots in the mid-west where the land is 90% farm land. I reckon that's where it go it's start.

There may have been deer from the Midwest and south Alabama released. I know that right near the pike and bullock line some Midwest deer were released back in the day. That's why they're so big in ghat stretch.

Do any of you know the story behind why deer had to be relocated to this area? I never knew that happened.

They were killed out. I don't know how much commercial hunting went on, if any, in this area or if it was just people killing them year round , non-stop to eat.

Yep, southern Appalachian, Hillbilly, bare dirt poor sharecroppers killed em all. I refer to those folks are my ancestors and proudly so.

I did not know that. I know my dad tells stories about having to hunt to eat growing up, so I can see how that could happen.

It's more important to know how to "grow" quality deer and keep them on your property.
