Blew off work yesterday and took a trip to the range. My first time on the long rifle range, and stretched my old remmy out. Proud of the old girl and my handloads as I was able to go 5 for 6 at 1000 yards on silouette steel. Chase the link below for the pic. Rem 700 VS in 308. Vortex viper, 168 gr. Sierra TMK, running 2700ft/sec.

It was too much fun! I ran out of rounds long before I was satisfied! Time to clean some brass!

Nice that will be pushing it for the little 308 but it can be done. I had mine to 1100 before I sold it.

My long range shooting advisor (aka: the enabler) seems to think I'll want something else pretty quick. I told him early on, you don't hand a teen-ager the keys to the Ferrari. Right now I'm pretty proud of that factory 308 and my handloads. There's still a good bit to learn!

No doubt. It will help you to learn how to read the wind and cost less to shoot. It suggest when you do step up a 300 win or a 7mm. There is a world of difference at that range in the upgrade.

Strategic is a nice place, wish something was close to where I lived other than clearcuts. Good shooting for first time also.

Reloader 79.. I'm near Montgomery, and it's a shade less than 4 hours to get there straight up I65 (that's running 80 most of the way). My wife's folks are near Boaz though, (2.5 hours)... when we go for visits, it's not too much trouble to slip off for a half day and go shoot.
They have a very reasonable long distance membership price (reduced $), so I figured if I can get up there 2-3 times a year it would be worth it to have those kind of distances to play around with.
When I attended the membership class, after clearing the waiting list, there were two guys there from the Houston TX area. It's that nice.

I have target turrets on that vortex. I dialed the elevation and just used the subtensions for the wind drift. Worked well.

If you gonna do it I would go with a 6.5/284. It's a beast at 1000. My hand loads hit with only a 100 ft/lbs of energy less than my 300wm at the same distance

Awesome stuff!!! I have a tack driving Sendero 7mm Rem Mag that I want to step out and shoot at that distance. I am having a ball shooting it out to 500. Shooting at longer distances than I ever have is becoming rather addictive.

The 6.5/284 is a heck of a cartridge but quick to burn a barrel out. As far as energy goes, it wont matter unless he is shooting at animals that far. I would find it hard to believe however that your 6.5/284 with a 140 grain pill would have only 100ft/lbs less than my 300 win mag pushing a 210 grain pill. I could be wrong and gladly admit it if I am.

Let me specify. 140s in the 6.5 and 180s in the 300. 6.5 at 1000 has 800ft/lbs of energy and the 300 has 915ft/lbs. if you jump up to the 210 then the spread widens to 800 and 1150. My 300 doesn't like the heavies.

Not really you are 3400 with the WBY out of a 26 and I'm like 3100 with the 6.5-284 long action from the same length barrel.
Basically the 6.5-284 in a long action is a significant improvement from the 6.5 Creed or 260 if you are shooting a target rifle in my opinion. Not like that is going to be a light rifle in either case.

Where are you getting this information? I use the app shooter. Hasn't let me down so far. As for the data on my 300, with my hand loads, that are mild,i am running 1111 ft/lbs at 1k yards.

You can calculate it with just about any ballistics software if you know the BC, weight and velocity. I have an excel file where all I do is plug in the data and it spits out the information. That being said you can go to a Bergers website and do the same.
What are you questioning? And for the record I use known data (velocity). All my loads are ran through a chronograph while testing.

I'm not as advanced as some of you. I have a friend with a chrono, so I know my velocities, but I just ran my numbers through the berger webpage ball calc. It was almost spot on all the way out to 1000.
I have a 6.5X55 swede sporter. I think if I go custom in the future, I want to do it off that caliber. My sporter is a tack driver, and a 120+ year old 6.5 mm cartridge is almost too good not to try.
I still like my 308 though. It's a $550 used rifle that was shooting right there with the ruger precision the guy was shooting beside me in 6.5 CM, with a scope that was double the price of mine. Also, brass is everywhere, not loading up a keg of powder for every round... yeah a grand is effectively maxing it out, but right now, that's all I need. BABY STEPS!

That's right man baby steps. The 308 is what I started out with and have progressed to bigger and better. I didn't have anyone to teach me I have learned everything on my own.

According to my loads with a 300 mag going by bullet drop app with 180 gr leaving the barrel at 3080fps chronographed, energy is around 1000 ft lbs at 1000, best I see a 6.5-284 is around 700 ft lbs with a 140, that's all I was saying. I have know idea if any of the info you or me is providing is right or wrong.
If I agreed with you, we'd both be wrong.

I'm sorry for hijacking the thread here but what does energy matter in this case. It's only relative if your killing something.

I'm sorry for hijacking the thread here but what does energy matter in this case. It's only relative if your killing something. Short answer is you are absolutely correct and I've derailed this thread pretty bad. Sorry OP!! It's still valid though. The higher the energy means the higher the BC. BC and energy dictates how fast the bullet drops and how well it bucks the wind. Most of the long range target bullets hit with more energy than hunting bullets. They just don't expand as well.

BC honestly is all kind of relative. The BC's published on every box of bullets are listed at a specific velocity. If you do not obtain that velocity the BC of the bullet will not be as high. Like I have said above everything I know about long range shooting has been self taught and you may know a hell of a lot more than myself but I don't see how much energy the projectile hits with (force) has at any impact on the projectiles BC during its flight. Target bullets have a different jacket that makes them not proper for hunting, i.e. They won't expand.

When talking about long range shooting all three are important to a degree. That was the point I was making.

I don't think it makes all that much difference as long as you are shooting paper.
I learned with a Mod 70 in 30-06 with a 10x external adjustment Unertl. One of those scopes that looks like a pencil and is about as long as the gun barrel.
You can get a different rifle and go shoot 1500 yards or even further is you want. If you know the distance sitting on the range and you've already got your dope figured out all that... big deal. You'll hit it.
If you want to challenge yourself shoot unknown distances. I know plenty of people who can shoot 1k, I know far far fewer that can just plop down somewhere range a target and shoot it and I know about a handful that can do it without some type of ballistic computer aide.
No government employees were harmed in the making of this mess.

Impressive. Which Vortex have you got?
If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14
