Well, I posted this in the Varmint section, but apparently no one visits there.
Are there any tips and tricks to give a beginner on predator hunting? Setup? Decoy? Just put out a call and hope for the best? etc.?

Hey snakebit, I saw your post in the Varmint thread but just don't know how to answer your question. I have been using a caller for years with very little success. Unless you have cows don't call around open fields. Stay back in the woods along roadbeds and you will get foxes and few coyotes to come to your calling and use a shotgun. The foxes will come in and stop and the coyotes seem to do a run by even with a decoy. I read on another forum that the success rate is 1 in 20 but I don't think I ever got that good yet.
If you can locate and know you have predators in the area you will have better luck.

I called all dang year one time and never got a shot at anything. My opinion is probably worthless. The only thing that ever worked for me was a female in heat bobcat call. After running that thing till about dark, I got up to go to the truck and there was a massive cat on the other side of the big old tree I was sitting against. Never even got him in the scope as he hightailed it. Looked like he was going to fight me at first but as soon as I laid a hand on a rifle - he took off like he was shot out of a cannon.
