Too dang hot! And way too many roads in what little bit of National Forest land. The states you mentioned have hundreds of thousands of acres of land that is public land with no roads thru them.

You never know. They saw some elk in SC that came down from NC within the last year.

I've been told they would do very well up here in the mountains. I'm afraid the farmers down in the valley wouldn't like them much when they started eating their crops. Personally I wish we had them. Would be some kinda cool to hear them bugling in these big hollows .

The RMEF has been working with the AG&F dept about stocking Alabama with an elk herd but to no avail yet

It really is, and hearing it on tv doesn't do it justice.....the way the sound carries is very strange. We watched a whole heard of them in a pasture near Cherokee from about 100yds away a couple of years ago. There were a few bulging and they sounded close and afar away at the same time, if that makes any sense. Very hard to describe.

I'd just like to hear them out my back door.

They are awesome. It will ruin many of you turkey fanatics. I have been blessed to hear them many times. When you mix the beautiful country and the majestic elk together it will stir your soul!

Bison and wolves were native here too at one point. Let's reintroduce those, too, if we're going to go back to native species.

ya'll do know that elk were introduced into west Al in the 30s or 40's???? They were all shot out or died. Nab Drennen had a set of antlers off one of them in his camphouse in Tishabee.

Yep. Pheasant and chukkar in Jackson County at some point, too, right?
Alabama doesn't need any elk and the CWD they'd bring. We have enough damned problems with deer.

I'd love it if it were feasible, which it probably isn't. There is nothing better than hunting an 800 lbs. turkey with a bow and arrow. That is about the best way to describe hunting bugling elk.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

I don't care as much about Alabama because we don't seem to have a lot of areas with habitat 2,500 years ago was before John Deere and Caterpillar. This was all forest.
I do hope that they continue their efforts up the Appalachian Mtns. East TN through VA full of Elk wouldn't hurt my feelings. Sounds like a good place to take a road trip if they ever had a huntable population and you could actually get a tag reasonable.
No government employees were harmed in the making of this mess.
