We caught three redfish and 10 whiting in the surf. On a 400 yard stretch of beach, there were five people other than us. We did have three drunk twentysomethings in skimpy bikinis walk by griping about no one being on "that crappy beach" and planning their next trip to PCB so they could "get more action". Mrs. Geno laughed, I pointed out the one with butt dimples was kind of cute, Mrs. Geno's neighbor who went with us just stared at us with his mouth open. We were seventy yards from the truck, had a few sections of 1.5" pvc driven into the sand - one for the massive umbrella and two for fishing poles. We hid under the umbrella, sipped adult beverages and had a nice picnic during the heat of the day and we played in the water and collected shells and sand dollars early and late when the sun had no real power. We set the rod holders where I could go out in the sun and cast and then come back under the umbrella to watch the rod tips. As the sun winked out, I could hear something crashing bait 50 yards or so out and I cast a skitterwalk out in that direction. Whatever it was spooled me in about 30 seconds and I had to clamp down on the spool to make the line break. Some of the folks on that beach had caught tarpon in the 100lb range the day before.

We were at a different beach yesterday afternoon where we found a couple dozen horshoe crabs, a bazzillion hermit crabs, a few shells and a bunch of specks. There were about ten people there when we arrived and about half that when we left.

Where are some slower places on the Gulf side? I like the beach but the crowds and traffic does get annoying. Personally I would like to go early fall but kids are in school so Summer is the only option. I do like June better than July. It seemed less crowded this year in Gulf Shores.

I have been lucky the last 3 trips we have made to Gulf Shores. Check in Time at the Condo we go is 4pm. We have always been able to get in around 2:30 or 3pm. We leave Morgan county around 5:30-6am. Ive made to the 37 exit by 10-10:30am. Then we eat lunch or go to the Alligator alley by 11-12. Go by some groceries and then check in. We met some folks this year who like staying at the smaller condos. The big ones hold so many people that the beach in front of them is packed more on the beach.

Best week ever and not been back.

Are you Kenny Chesney? You pretty much lived the song "Anything but mine," and you're from Cleveland.

Ha, good observation. That's one of the few Kenny Cheney songs I don't mind.

I love the beach, but not during peak season. I've had fun fishing that past few times I've gone, and wife likes hanging out and relaxing.

Wife dragged me to Walmarks for provisions. That place looked like a damn storm was coming. They were out of sliced cheese and a lot of stuff picked over.
I'd just as soon take my week in October and spend it fishing or bowhunting at the house.

Man, yer gonna need a lot of wine to go with that there cheese. I'd recommend Rouse's Supermarket; the one you drove by to go fight yer way thru Walmarks. Or you could go out of your way 2 blocks north to Winn-Dixie. Serious question. How many Walmarks ya'll reckon there are between Lake Guntersville and Gulf Shores?

I bet you're that guy that stands in line with his family for an hour or 2 just to get whatever the kid throws in the fryer at the Oyster House, Docs, or... and biotches because its hot in July at the beach. And then to show who's boss, you stiff the little waitress since you waited 3 hours for shitty food.

Ya'll drive down here at the same time, check-in at the same time, fight over who can give money the fastest to Walmarks, go eat at the same place at the same time, go to the mall at the same time, check out at the same time, drive home at the same time and biotch the whole way because its crowded down here.

Please do everybody a favor when you return home and spread the word. It's terrible down here.

When I am King, I will return Gulf Shores, Romar Beach, Orange Beach, and Pensacola Beach to their former glory. I will knock down every single condo. I will bulldoze every blessed t-shirt and knick-knack shop. I will raze every got-dang big restaurant. Ono Island will once again be an unspoiled island. There will be a few little bars and restaurants, where you can get oysters and crab claws. There might be a putt-putt with some concrete dinosaurs, a few little cottages, a bait shop here and there, and that's it!! Mostly sand and sea oats and solitude. I spent a lot of time in Gulf Shores as a kid. My memories are sublime. Now, it bites the big one. Give me a wrecking ball, some dozers, and some dynamite and caps, I can fix it.

I just pulled in the driveway from Destin and it was packed out down there! coming back up 65 was like coming down the back stretch at Talladega but at least it was rolling.

If it was there circa 1960, no problem. If not, you are SOL! grin

Well in 1989 I was from Stevenson, it was a good week though. Probably why I've never been back, no way to top it. I've been to gulf shores, myrtle beach, Huntington Beach, South Beach, Virginia Beach, Venice beach, Santa Monica, Santa Barbara, Ventura, Seal Beach and countless others on 4 of the Hawaiian islands and the 3 USVI but none have come close to that week in PCB. 8 boys on the edge of adulthood and way too much vodka, which is another thing I've not done since that summer lol.

Finally deported myself from the peoples republik of Kaliforkistan.

I get bored at the beach unless I can boogie board or fish. Over 90 degrees and I rather sit on an oven eye than be covered in sand and sweet.

You should have seen it when I was a kid living there in the seventies. We lived at the corner of 30A and 98 in Inlet Beach and there was nothing much from one end to the other. I remember the day that Seaside was first started being developed. I couldn't at that time understand why anyone wanted to be way out here. From 1970 to 2006 when we sold out and today I still can't believe how much that area has grown. My daddy always knew it was going to happen so we bought would could back then anticipating a nice return someday.

My grandparents lived in Blue Mountain Beach on Big Redfish Lake. It is unreal how much that place has changed. I used to love it over there because it was only locals and rarely saw any tourist. Complete opposite now. There were no condos on the lake until about 10 years ago, now there are 2. It is ruined as far as I'm concerned.

I love going to "the beach", but if I touch sand, its because I hit an errant golf shot.

love the food, fishing, golf, pool,... but I don't do the sitting on the beach thing. my wife will sit there all day

when we went to pc public beach last year, a pickup full of 6 black men pulled up to my family while we were getting stuff out of the trunk. the men sarted shouting f u were going to kill you. and your going to hell. I asked a security guard about it later and he said they were known as the 100 milers, to the locals. apparantly there are people that come from 100 miles away to harass white people there.

Between Destin and PCB is a 3 ring circus. I don't mind it because we fish so we aren't out in front of a Condo sweating under an umbrella. I don't do that.

People that don't want a crowd you need to look at Mexico Beach I haven't been in a long time but last time it was real quiet, Port St. Joe, St. George, on the Atlantic Hilton Head, St. Simons doesn't have much beach but is a nice little area.

Everyone from 6 states doesn't have to pile into one area but they do. There are other places to go.

If you don't like traffic plan to go and come on days other than the weekend and it is not bad at all.

Those areas are a dump. I would advise anyone to stay the hell away from there.

Yep the whole area. Nothing but a bunch or white trash lives down there. That place has more red necks than a wild game dinner mud rasslin' monster truck race.

This thread reminds me of the B'ham deer show thread. Same people keep complaining , same people keep going back every year.

Didn't know Mexico Beach and down that way had more white trash than PCB. Figured it would have got nicer.

That's saying something. I would like to formally retract that suggestion.
