I see wooden shooting houses on the side of the road from time to time for sale but I’ve never stopped and asked…..What are folks generally charging for them?? Does anyone have an idea of the cost to build one.....a general estimate?

I have built 4x4 houses for around $250 and 4x6 for around $350. 1/2 inch T111 on the sides, 2x4 frame 3/4 treated roof and floor, tin roof and painted inside and out. Cauked and sealed to make them as air tight as possible.

Thanks fellas! The reason I’m asking is because I have a cousin who runs a framing crew in north Alabama framing up houses, barns, etc……They stay pretty busy. He saves up scraps and such that they have and has a bunch put back he’s thinking about making some shooting houses out of. It looks like we’re about to pick up a new lease that we’re gonna make bow hunting only and we had the idea of selling a handful of shooting houses to raise funds…… I want to buy some quality loc-ons for us to bow hunt from. I’m trying to figure out a reasonable price for him to charge. I thought if we kept the price around “cost” or there abouts then folks might be more willing to buy them quickly. I think he’s talking about having enough scrap to build 5-10. PM me if anyone in north Alabama might be interested. This is in Marshall Co. He's come down here to Macon Co fairly often though so if anyone between here or there might be interested let me know. If a Aldeer member buys them I’ll pay the 3% just like I’m using the classified forum. Matter of fact, I may just start a thread in there.

I prefer a tin top and sides but you will need some type of insulation to keep condensation and noise down. However they should last a long, long time with little or no maintenance
Two roads diverged in the woods and I took the one with deep ruts, hills and mud.It may be bumpy but WHAT A RIDE!

They always cost me a lot more than I intend on spending. I can budget the wood with no problem, but it is the little things that add up. More screws, hasps, eye bolts, etc. The tin for a roof, if you can't find some used, always runs my costs up. I like to build my own because it is something to do in the off season and I make them like I want them. Generally, I have about $300 in one, depending on how much I can salvage from our scrap pile or old shooting houses. It is not worth it to build your own if your time is valuable and you don't have some to spare.
The ones I've asked about on the side of the road are averaging about $400, give or take 75 or so.
We have a couple that Moodyc24 made for us and there is nothing wrong with them at all, except that he likes his windows shorter than we normally have them, but he can fix that if you let him know what you want beforehand. He makes his windows 36" from the floor. I make mine 42".
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

After the last one I built ended up costing me upwards of $500, I have decided from now on I'll just buy the dang things as needed. Timber co. is about to cut a couple of hundred acres on my Lee co. lease so I'll probably pick up a couple before the season starts as long as the funds are available.
What you do today, you have to sleep with tonight.

I build mine 1). To last, and 2). To accommodate the hunter. More on that later. 6x6 shooting house. 6x6 back porch. The height is what the terrain dictates. Usually 12-14 high. The one I'm working on now will be metal exterior. I fram it like a house. Metal on outside and roof including over porch. Roll insulation between studs, rafters, and floor joist mainly for sound. Inside is OSB. Over the OSB is carpet. Floors, walls, and roof are carpet. Bottom of floor joist is plywood. Stairs with rails and railing around porch
All of this trying to create an atmosphere a small child can handle a long sit. They can get in the floor and play with hotwheels, coloring book, take a nap, whatever. Also want it to be able to accommodate a wheelchair and multiple people.
Odd thing is the favorite thing of all kids is peeing off the back porch that high up.

Do something to set yours apart. Go by a mobile home parts place and purchase some of the sliding windows for about $30 each and use those. You'll be able to sell them at a premium.

Funny you should say that,Yelp. I just bought 2 trailer windows from lowes for $38 a piece. I have a 6'x6' house that i will have about $300 in. It's not elevated. It will have metal roof and sides and i already had the metal. I have a roll of bubble wrap that you put under tin, i think i'll wrap it around it and take a razor knife and trim out the windows and door. It's sitting on a power line and i can see almost 300 yards in either direction.

You won't build one bigger than 4x4 that will last for under $500-600. If you'll just use treated plywood on it instead of OSB it will last about 2 times longer. I've had some that have been up 10 years easily and may have another 10 left in them.
Those will run you more in that $1k range. They are built right. I build the base with ears on them and set them on telephone poles. Very nice.
And then I show the food plot hunters what a great place I've built them to hunt and I go hunt out of a lock-on on the other side of the property.
No government employees were harmed in the making of this mess.
