What do you guys use on your dogs as far as cleaning ears and ear infections and how often do you do the cleaning? My lab is about to be 12 and has never has any issues nor have I ever cleaned his ears but this 1yr old boykin is a different deal. I was cleaning her ears 1-2x a week with some stuff from my vet and she came down with an ear infection that I have finally gotten cleared up. I am just wondering if maybe I was over cleaning them.

Aurocin is what my trainer uses and recommends. It's not a cure all for everything, but that's what he uses on all his labs.

You absolutely can over clean them. I think frequent cleaning over irritates and allows secondary infection. I also frequently see ear infections with atopy (allergies). I really like Dechra's Triz-EDTA flush. I'd use it about 1-2 times a week. It really helps with dogs that currently have an infection as well (with proper antimicrobial therapy).

You must clean a Boykins ears after they have been in the water. We use a wash I get from our vet.

I had a friend recommend Zymox OTIC for dogs that have an ear infection but I was leery to purchase it even with thousands of five star reviews on amazon. I don't want to be putting just anything in her ears that could cause trouble down the road.

I actually use zymox otic from time to time on ears that aren't terrible yet. It's a good product.
